72253 2002-08-19 02:16:00 As seen in the Herald today, stupidly forwarding those "true stories" sent to you via email can cost you your job:

Emails hard to swallow (www.nzherald.co.nz)

72254 2002-08-19 02:52:00 Although shocked that the Mobil staff had been fired, Mr Waldren believed they deserved to be.

I don't think they deserved to be. They probably honestly believed the email was true, and so passed it on to their friends etc., so as to warn then, much like most people do with the virus hoax emails that go around.

Well then they're gullible fools who shouldn't be given access to the internet or email.

72256 2002-08-19 04:10:00 But if we are going to have "standards" for use of the Internet, it's going to be a very lonely place, honeylaser. "It'd be just me, and thee. And I have my doubts about thee." :D Graham L (2)
72257 2002-08-19 04:26:00 I guess the moral of the story is that if you must gossip - don't do it at work. Boy, that's a big ask! andy (473)
72258 2002-08-19 04:29:00 The moral of the story is that people need to learn to trust no information given them via email/the net without verifying the source . And "stories" of this type are 95% bogus and always will be . Still, I think sacking them was a bit rough . If that rule was applied to everyone there'd be some major unemployement going on . . . . . 72259 2002-08-19 09:00:00 Next they will sack you for gossiping at work (although gossip can be a cruel beast in itself). Don't employees get warnings any more. Dolby Digital (160)
72260 2002-08-19 22:24:00 A warning and fine would be more apropriate in my opinon kiwibeat (304)
72261 2002-08-19 22:37:00 When one of my staff brought it up yesterday I mentioned that I think dismissing them was a bit too harse but these people need to understand NZ slander law is pretty clear on this.

Anyone remember the Proctor and Gamble rumours many years ago (b4 emails were the norm)? My wife (girl friend at that time) and her friends wanted to boycott all P&G products because they were rumoured to have links to the Satanic church. Not one of them have seen the Donahue episode yet a fax with some accusation was immediately accepted as facts.

Over a year ago I monitored to my amusement junk mails being intercepted by our company email filter. The first one was about two guys trying to sell perfume to women outside Walmart (LOL!!!) in Australia. Then within the hour, the next one was Foodtown in Hamilton, and by the end of the day it was all over NZ!!! I forwarded some examples to the NZ Herald and the next day was shocked to to read in the Herald that FoodTown posted a warning at their supermarket warning their shoppers to watch out for men selling perfumes at their carparks.

All I can say is... there are a lot of gullible people working among us (and you could be one of them :P ).
