72646 2002-08-20 06:07:00 I've just moved a perfectly working Sony CRX100E CDRW drive from a Win XP box to a Win 2000 box. In the bootup phase it doesn't pick up that it's there, nor does it do so after W2000 is working.
I've got (I think) the correct master/slave jumper setting, and the cable that plugs into the CD is straight off another working CD in the same computer.
I tried various Sony sites but could find no info there.
I Google searched for issues but can't find anything that makes any sense. Anybody got any ideas why it's invisible and not working under Win 2000?

72647 2002-08-20 06:15:00 Windows 2000, much like XP and NT, have moved away from something called "ASPI" layers... you'll need to do a search on Google for something called "ForceAspi" ... download the program and install... this will give you an Aspi layer which will enable your Cd-writer to be recognised under Windows 2000.

Also be sure that whatever software you use, it is compliant with Windows 2000

72649 2002-08-20 09:01:00 If the drive isn't being detected in bootup I'd suspect it's not the ASPI problem but rather your drive not being detected at all by your system. You say you think you've got your jumper settings right - well make sure, swap them around a bit and have another go. Also go into your system BIOS and check that it's set to detect the drive (It may be set to not detect anything, so it'll go thinking that there's no drive there at all).

72650 2002-08-20 11:15:00 Thanks for the quick responses.
I took the point about it being something other than an aspi problem, got a light to see what I was doing (better than groping in the dark beneath the table where the computer in question resides), saw what I was doing and found that one of the pins was bent. Straightened it, plugged the cable back in, and then everything went smoothly after that.
So, I'm embarrassed, grateful & happy!

no need to be embarrassed - similar things happen to all of us all the time - it's all part of ripping the computer apart :p

72652 2002-08-20 22:59:00 yeah good call about the Aspi layer Mike... didn't read it properly!! Should have realised the whole writer wasn't even detected in startup... ;) Lohsing (219)
