| 72524 | 2002-08-20 04:33:00 | There is an "official" document about naming computers on the Internet. It's by Don Libes (a well-known pioneer) and dates from August 1990. It is an FYI -- For Your Information (less "official" than an RFC). FYI0005 (www.alliedtelesyn.co.nz) is the one. There are a few others which might amuse ... up one directory level, and look for FYI0035 and 0038. Spam was a problem in the newsgroups even then. FYI0009 was a "Who's Who on the Internet", produced in 1992 to mark the 20 years since the ARPA Net started. Of course, I haven't followed Don's advice, so my boxes are called things like: Bravo, Digital, Compaq, Compaq2, Cisco1, Cisco2, Vax, 90T, brouter, Shiva, ... But every computer has a name ... even if it's something like "That &%$#@ thing". |

Regarding PC names - the old one is Percy and the other one is Mercury because it was fast back then.... Will have to think up something better than that when the new one moves in. |

| 72528 | 2002-08-20 06:43:00 | I was undecided, and was sick of typing long IP addresses and names when diagnosing my network, so I stole tux from the linux penguin for my pc, and called my flatmates PC dre as his name is Andrei. Nice, short and easy to remember. G P |
