72706 2002-08-20 09:30:00 Hi everyone,

I am going to reformat/reinstall my OS in the weekend.

I want to back up my files - I have WinME. Is there a program that comes with ME (ie already on my puter) that will enable me to backup all my programs

Thanks everyone in advance K.K.

72707 2002-08-20 09:36:00 I think "MS backup" is hidden deep on the ME CD, but if you want to "backup" all your programs, they will be unlikely to run again when "restored"

This is because the programs write critical "keys" into the registry, when you do a fresh Windows install these are not there and need the program to be re-installed from original files/CDs

The way around this is to use commercial drive image software, but then you would be back where you started?

72708 2002-08-20 09:37:00 Yes there is and its called ( funnily enough ) Microsoft Backup. You can either go Here (http://dipstick01.hostnz.co.nz/) for instructions or you can just insert your ME cd and browse the disc. You are looking for a folder labelled ADD ONS. Inside this after a bit of looking...sorry the cd drive is busy at the mo so can't insert to give you the exact order of search.... you will find a folder labelled MSBackup. Open this and then double click on msbexp.exe and it will install Microsoft Backup to your system tools folder.
When using this program to backup stop as many applications as possible from running, this includes system restore. And if you have a large drive/s make sure you have the room to save the backup file too.

72709 2002-08-20 09:41:00 lol.....I just posted and godfather must have done so at the same time.

I've used MSBackup before and this will restore your system to EXACTLY how it was when you saved the backup, If you are reformatting to have a cleanout etc then this is probably not a good idea. I suggest you download all the drivers etc that you need from the net and make a cd or file on another drive and then wipe and start from scratch.

72710 2002-08-20 10:13:00 I have been looking at Drivers lately & always assumed that there were "A Few". However I found a program that listed all the ones on my computer. I believe there were over 200 of the little blighters. Am I correct? If so, how do you know which ones are current or not? Thanks Poppa John Poppa John (284)
72711 2002-08-20 10:33:00 If you back up all of your computer the file is massive and unless you have a separate drive to transfer it to it will involve copying to several CD's. I find it best to backup by creating you own selected backup job instead of using the wizard.

Open up Backup and click on Back up Selected files, folders, and drives. Then choose which directories to save (eg My Documents, Favourites, Antiviral files (updates), address book etc). The rest can be reloaded from original CD's. Then select all selected files. Where to back up browse and save to an handy place on the C drive (not under My documents though). How to back up choose what options suit you. Start. When it is finished just go and copy the backup file to a CD.

If you save this backup job you can use it regularly to backup your most important files by just selecting Open an existing backup job at the start and then choosing New and changed files. Under options the advanced tab allows you to backup your registry as well.

This instructions asume that you keep you most important irreplaceable files under My Documents and not scattered all over your C drive :D

72712 2002-08-21 00:49:00 To K K. Thankyou for picking the name you did. I assume it is a play on Colonel Klink off the POW TV series. Colonel = Kernal, which is the core of an "OS" like XP. Klonk is Klink? Sounds like my heart sometimes.Everytime I see it I go like this :D :D :D :D :D
