73350 2002-08-23 06:07:00 Hi - new HTML prob.

I have a site hosted at http://subdomain.orcon.net.nz So that users don't have to remember that url I have a domain at www.mydomain.tk. This is provided by a redirection service redirecting visitors to my actual site.

When the visitor is redirected, the url etc is still the .tk one, so I assume the redirection service just places my site inside a frame hosted at the .tk server. How can I make my site automatically break out of the frame?

ie. can I make index.htm contain something along the lines of a tag like <META http-equiv="refresh" content="5; url=http://subdomain.orcon.net.nz/mainpage.htm"> But specify the target to be "_top" to break the page out of the .tk frame, and load in the main window?

If not, is there another way to acheive the same effect?

Cheers

73351 2002-08-23 06:40:00 If your potential visitors can't manage to type a few more characters in the URL, do you really want them? Or are you restricting yourself to words of one letter, for the "more challenged"? Graham L (2)
73352 2002-08-23 06:50:00 if you want your page to 'break out of frames ', just insert this between the <head> tags

<script language="javascript">
if (window!= top)
top.location.href=location.href
</script>

you could also stop the dot.tk ad pop up too, but that would be cheating

73353 2002-08-23 06:52:00 Graham, never underestimate the ignorance (L. ignosco - I do not know) of a computer user.

Oh ... I'm a computer user!

Hmmm...

73355 2002-08-23 07:13:00 I l ike that - cheers, I have found a couple of others that do the same job, but none as short as yours.

I have another query - what is everyone's opinion on frames - what is the best way to acheive the static left menu and dynamic main content without using frames??

73356 2002-08-23 07:31:00 Frames . They work . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . usually .

. useit . com/alertbox/990502 . html" target="_blank">www . useit . com is well worth a read on the subject .

Myself I can live without them - although I have on rare occassions used them .

We're just redoing the office site and getting rid of the frames in the process . Mind you, I do have server side includes (Cold Fusion) to avoid duplicating the menu!

If you're new to coding I'd avoid them until you completely understand the pitfalls .

73357 2002-08-23 08:27:00 Heather - been there, read that, but htanks anyway. I am researching the use of CSS stylesheets to replace my frames, as I have discovered many of the pifalls firsthand.

Will continue to plod on.

73358 2002-08-23 08:52:00 I would recommend http://www.cjb.com as a better redirection service than .tk this is just a personal opinion of mine and maybe something you could look at.

Cheers
