| 73832 | 2002-08-25 14:19:00 | I just got was asked about this "the little red X that appears over the TV screen thingy in the corner of the screen stays there for ages, it used to disconnect instantly" I have asked and found that it is hanging on to the fone line during the "disconnection" period. operating system ME modem type, unknown, till she gets off the fone again Anyway.. a software problem, or is the modem on its way out? |

| 73834 | 2002-08-25 15:18:00 | Sorry chris I dont know the answer to this but my computer has suddenly developed exactly the same problem after my last reformat. This was about the time xtra started their email anti virus so emailed them asking about it and all I received in reply was a stock standard reply about their anti virus scheme in general. I have the same type of modem and OS and I have been through updating drivers and rechecking settings to no avail. I have run various scans for trojans and viruses and also checked for keyloggers and anything else I can think of including spyware and programs reporting home. And yes it is DAMN annoying |

| 73837 | 2002-08-26 03:20:00 | It can't be a modem fault. ;-) (Well, nearly can't. There is a relay to connect/disconnect, and relays usually fail , not slow down). The modem hardware is told to "lift the handpiece" to connect to the exchange. (This can be automatic ... "pick up after 2 rings", etc). It is told to "hang up" when the computer is finished with it. If it couldn't connect at all ... I think the problem is in the software. ]:) |

| 73838 | 2002-08-26 03:41:00 | Someone had this problem about 6 months ago, cant remember the exact cure but dont think it was quite as simple as the driver, I *think* it may have been cured by uninstall, remove, reboot, refit, reinstall. Which suggests that a corrupt driver file was not getting updated (because it was still there) |

| 73839 | 2002-08-26 03:47:00 | It is a modem fault, but not in the way you'd think... it's because of the type of modem - the "56K smart HCF int modem" in this case... it's a controllerless winmodem from Conexant, and it seems almost everyone (including myself) with this modem has the same problem. It's just something that happens with this modem, and you either learn to live with it (I do - it usually doesn't take longer than 10 seconds to disconnect now under XP - used to take a couple of minutes when I used ME), or buy a better modem (even a HSF soft winmodem works better :)) Mike. |

| 73841 | 2002-08-26 05:16:00 | Have you updated your modem drivers recently? this may have caused it to start. Else something else recently installed may have caused it to start happening. I'm not sure what causes it, it's just that this is what I've narrowed it down to over the past year through various similar posts on this forum. Mike. |
