73968 2002-08-27 07:47:00 Hi Mike, with regard to your rules not working came across a couple of things/forums that say it is a bug that stops them working first time and the sp isn't covering it apparently - anyway check out this thread, i hope it may be of some help, also in it, it says how to stop auto download of mail which is also a workaround for the Rules not working.
Sounds like turning off: Auto send & receiving before you shut down does it??

Hope you find something of help there as it sounds like your 2 probs are a bit connected in a way??? E.g you have to turn off auto download to have the rules apply to your first mail download??
:-) However hopefully you will have sorted it by now from some of the other posts :-)
oops almost forgot just in case - Control + Alt + S - Will give you the Send/Receive Groups dialogue box, to change the auto download in too.

73969 2002-08-27 08:55:00 Well thanks everybody, but it seems all the suggestions offered don't quite fit what I need done here :( I still can't turn off the autodownload on startup...

I'll check out those URLs for the Rule problem though, thanks JZEP.

73970 2002-08-27 08:59:00 Mike, I use Outlook 2002, and while I dont use it for email (Eudora) I have it fully configured as read only, leave on the server.

Mine does not run when I start Outlook, I am on Jetstream so it could easily do so but it sits there until I ask it.

Nothing special in its setup, but I have no rules set - is that the answer?

I don't think so - I mean I can set it to not automatically download emails, but then it wouldn't download any unless I told it to manually, which I don't want either :) I just don't want it to check when I open Outlook... this is the only time I don't want it to check automatically...

73972 2002-08-27 09:07:00 OK so you want it to check say every 15 minutes?

It will start when its opened in that case, as it begins it 15 minute (or whatever) check schedule.

Eudora does that as well.

What do you want, do you want it to sit for (15 min) after opening and then start, If so probably out of luck?

That's what I want :) and it used to do it (ie Outlook 2000), so it should be able to... stupid Microsoft :(

73974 2002-08-27 11:02:00 This is all very confusing, I think there must be different versions around.
I know the setting you want but yours seems to be in a different place.
I can't check this but if you have Tools/Send Receive settings have a look in there.
It will be near the top when you click on Tools.

If I look there these are the options available to me:

Warn Before switching an existing dial-up connection
X Always use an existing dial-up connection
Automatically dial during a background Send/Receive
X Hang up when finished with a manual Send/Receive

(The options with X are ones I have selected). There are no other options under the Dial Up heading.

73976 2002-08-27 12:22:00 Mike, I forgot a link i found - Guy had the exact opposite to you, he wasn't getting his checking on startup and wanted it to, so was given the directions for that - so i am presuming if you can turn it on there you can turn it off hopefully, along the same lines as Jim said - 2 different places to look:
under Options, General tab. Check mail at startup.
OR
Try in the "Tools" menu:
Tools / Options "Mail setup" tab, "Send/Receive" button to customize all your send & receive options including when...
the link to the thread is
computing.net
But thats about all it says and the guy says he found the setting thanks to those instructions.
Guess it may be worth checking in those places
:-)
Afraid i can't assist anymore but hope that may have what you need!?:|

73977 2002-08-27 22:24:00 Hmmm... well on my Outlook it's just not there! How strange. I can set it to automatically check mail on program exit but not when I start the program.

Maybe I need to get SP2 - it's probably in there somewhere...
