73921 2002-08-26 03:07:00 Hi everyone
I have a Telecom/Xtra Jetstream account and a Clearnet flat rate account. In July, I suddenly was stopped from downloading my Pop3 email from Clear via my Jetstream connection.
I now retrieve email via a clear dialup or webmail.
I contacted Clear about my flat rate account Pop3 access and they advised that I need Mail+ to access my email from a different ISP connection.
This is very annoying as I had to change to Xtra for Jetstream as the Clear Tempest is too expensive. Now I will be forced to join Xtra for email as well.
Has anyone got a workaround to get Clear email via Jetstream without Mail+?
regards
Marty

73922 2002-08-26 03:38:00 I am surprised that they allowed POP3 cross-access for so long, many others clamped down a year or more ago.

Other than setting up an auto-forward rule to somewhere you can access, I dont see how you can do it. Someone else may have cracked it, who knows!

One of the reasons I have a domain name, it gives me portability without changing email addresses

73923 2002-08-26 03:43:00 I've never been able to download my Clear emails from another ISP - at least not in the past 2 years anyway - might have been able to before then, but I never tried.

73925 2002-08-26 06:48:00 Well Paradise and IHug both allow it. IHug even let me send e-mail through them while connected to another ISP with a free service.

Cant see why anyone would clamp down on cross POP3. SMTP sure but why POP3?

73926 2002-08-26 09:21:00 Apparently its a fine line between letting people cross connect and operating an open server which will get the ISP blacklisted on other servers. Its easier to control if access is kept in the same domain. godfather (25)
73927 2002-08-26 09:50:00 Marty,

We use both ClearNET and Xtra. Xtra is the Jetstream ADSL provider and the main email provider with ClearNET being another backup email provider. We access the Clear pop3 account from Outlook when ever we want when connected via Jetstream.

In the pop3 account in Outlook we have defined the incoming mail POP server to point to pop.clear.net.nz and the outgoing smtp server as smtp.xtra.co.nz, the account name/pwd is the clearnet account information.

Is this defined as relaying since we are connecting directly to Clear for incoming mail? outgoing mail also works without problems. This setup seems to work fine currently.

73928 2002-08-26 11:48:00 Email relaying only applies to SMTP outgoing mail servers.
ISP's do not allow you to connect to to another ISP with your modem and send through their SMTP server, this is when you get the Relaying Denied error.
There are some exceptions depending on email addresses which can be sent but this does not mean it is an open server situation.

It is quite acceptable to change the SMTP server address to be the same as the ISP you connect with and leave the POP server address correct for the other ISP as most ISP's apart from Xtra allow access to download mail from their POP server regardless of who the modem or ADSL connection is with.

73929 2002-08-26 20:40:00 Thanks Babe
I used to connect that way, but now it is blocked. I have tried it at home with pop.clear.net.nz or pop3.clear.net.nz Now neither work and I have also tried from our office jetstream connection which is blocked also (and that used to work as well)
I can still send email like you via smtp.xtra.co.nz
It sounds like you may run into the same problem shortly as well.

73930 2002-08-26 21:22:00 It is possible to set up an auto-forward rule within your Clear account.
I don't believe that there is a charge attached to this
This can send your mail to the xtra server letting you collect it without having to log into Clear.
(You also need to ensure you delete after forwarding)
