73736 2002-08-25 07:35:00 I have the same problem as someone wrote about in Feb, their mad mouse. I also have a laptop, not Acer Ventura like hers, but a compaq armada 3500. The cursor has a mind of its own, leaping around the document, closing it down, deleting & re-formatting continually. Altho it happens when I use OE it happens when I'm not connected to the Internet, so no Back0rifice etc, and still happens when I disconnect the mouse and remove the mouse drivers, and also when I use another mouse with different drivers. I am running Win 98SR2, Office 2000 and IE & OE 6. It does it in Word too, and I have come close to throwing it (lappy) out the window at times ... Could it be something to do with the display or video memory? Another odd thing it does is to return the screensaver to <none> every time it boots up. Or maybe a dying battery? Any ideas out there? Much+++ appreciated ... holdteus (1625)
73737 2002-08-25 07:52:00 I think that model has a "G-spot" input device (little button beside the G key)

Is there a possibility this is the cause?

Have a look in the bios setup to see if you can disable it. I have a Toshiba that uses similar, and have it set to disable if a mouse is detected, as I find that accidentally touching it while typing was causing similar problems to yours.

73738 2002-08-25 07:59:00 Poltergeists perhaps? Hi Holdteus, I recently bought a 2nd hand Compaq Armada 1592 and had many problems with Win98SE crashing and intermitent problems. However these all went away after visiting the Compaq site and downloading updates including a BIOS update that did wonders. Perhaps the 3500 series isnt happy with Win98SE as well.

I would recommend you visit the Compaq site and download updates. There should be a FAQ on Win98 installation and recommended updates.

Go to www.compaq.com and select your model and o/s and it should take you to the updates page.

cheers

73739 2002-09-04 17:01:00 greetings godfather & thanks for yr suggestion. Unfortunately compaq boots up with a unowhat splash screen then straight into Win98 and I have been unable to access setup to date. I have tried esc, F1 F2 del etc before Win98 boots up with no success so far. Any further ideas??? Sorry for the delay, this is a developing country & everything takes soooo much longer... holdteus (1625)
73740 2002-09-04 21:58:00 The Compaq Armada 1700 used F10, which was pressed when the cursor was flashing in the upper right of the screen at boot time.

Hope that helps.

73741 2003-03-01 08:08:00 hiya godfather, long time I know but you may be interested to know the problem is now solved - I have another computer, Compaq 7800 with my hard drive installed which now works fine. I did take the other one into the Compaq service centre here who, after 2 days, said nothing wrong & reload Windows. Then it got worse (whiteouts etc) so I took it back to the man I got it off & he lent me the one I have now while he checked it out. Finding? Wiring in hinge & screen dead & very/too expensive to fix. Thanks for your help, we did eliminate those possibilities ... holdteus :-) holdteus (1625)
