73742 2002-08-25 06:45:00 Hi,

just wondering if anyone knew if Xircom Netwave wireless network PCMCIA cards used the now standard 802.11B wireless networking protocols?

Any help appreciated

Thanks,

Martin

Netwave devices are not compatible with IEEE 802.11 wireless network.

73744 2002-08-25 06:56:00 hi,

thanks for the quick reply. do you know what they use? if i managed to get an access point, would they still be able to connect, or do they have to connect specifically to another Netwave Card?

Thanks,

Martin

73745 2002-08-25 07:03:00 I think they use standard ethernet protocols?

I therefore assume you need a Xircom access point? I think some access points can handle both though.

I found that info on the web, if you type xircom netwave protocol into www.google.co,nz you should get some more info. (800 hits)

I have used wireless networking, and was completely underwhelmed....

73746 2002-08-25 07:06:00 i am just wanting to have a try out at a bit of wireless networking at home, between my laptop and small network, and will most probably be getting this card. thanks for all the help

73747 2002-08-25 07:10:00 I used 802.11 in Sydney late last year, in a CBD apartment. We wanted to network between adjacent apartments, there was only an internal wall between but it must have been made of metal? as we could barely get connection.

What are you going to use for your access point, it will have to be Xircom compatable?

73748 2002-08-25 07:18:00 i dont have an access point as yet - as there are 2 cards coming - but one of them is proably not working. These cards up up for auction, and my bid, which was the starting bid, is also the reserve... :-( I also don't have the $$ at the moment to get an Access Point, so it is something i will be working on over a while by the looks of it martyhb (1277)
73749 2002-08-25 07:54:00 If they were both working, you could try a PCI to PCMCIA adapter and the second card in one PC, but it could be tricky trying to bridge your networks, may need XP? godfather (25)
73750 2002-08-25 07:59:00 i am getting a new laptop - arrives tuesday, and it has XP on it

will let you know how i get on!

73751 2002-08-25 08:12:00 But you may need XP on another PC, to enable you to bridge the wireless network, having it on the laptop is fine but its on the wrong end.... godfather (25)
