73689 2002-08-25 03:50:00 I have just installed a new cd-rw (BTC BCE4012IM/ 40x12x48) and it works ok but i would like a little help getting the original cd-rom to work as well. When the two are connected i get a bit freezy. I wish I had a bit more time to wade through all the faqs but time is very limited. Hope someone can help. Thanks pixelpix (1621)
73690 2002-08-25 04:02:00 Have you checked the jumpers on the back of the drives, to see if they are conflicting.

If they are sharing the one flat ribbon cable, they should be set for master, and slave. Or, depending how its set up, for Cable select.

You will know by looking at the old one, the jumper positions are marked.

73691 2002-08-25 04:05:00 If they are connected to the same IDE cable, one must be selected as slave, the other as master. On the back of each, there is a section with three pairs of pins. There will be one movable jumper and the pairs of pins will be marked MA SL CS. (probably in that order) Graham L (2)
73692 2002-08-25 04:14:00 Thanks Graham
I have to open the case again to check but it does ring a bell.
So what does the CS stand for?

73694 2002-08-25 04:22:00 CS is a select option which is sometimes used. It requires a cable which has one wire cut after the first disk connector. It is uncommon. Graham L (2)

Hmm...I have 3 PCs here and they all use CS (perhaps its a HP thing?)

73696 2002-08-25 04:35:00 I've got about 15 (or so) and none of them use it ... :D Graham L (2)
73697 2002-08-25 10:59:00 Thanks for the help, all sorted....except for the spare audio line? where does that go :)
By the way my cd-wr didn't come with instructions.

73698 2002-08-25 12:31:00 If your sound card (or motherboard) has a second audio input, thats where it goes. If you dont, then dont worry, as why would you want sound from the writer if you use your old CD drive for playing??

By the way, you seemed puzzled as to what CS meant. Cable Select
