2002-08-27 23:50:00 | Hi ppl I have an HP 695c deskjet, parallel port conn. Comp is an AMD K6-2 500Mhz, 196MB PC100 RAM, MSI 5174 mobo running Windoze98SE, Bios is set to EPP/ECP for LPT1. Since the last Windoze reload I have had printer problems in the form of- from Word I might get one page printed then the printer does a spazz (making horrible noises as well) and spits out a couple of blank pages. It won't print at all from Publisher or Outlook Express ( just has a spazz) I have deleted the printer several times and reinstalled, updated the drivers, given the printer to a friend to test on his comp (he declared it working perfectly with same apps). The printer sets up ok and passes the comms test so I'm thinking it's a Windoze problem as the port seems to test ok and checks out fine in the System. Does anyone have any ideas before I waste another day of my life reloading Windoze? Any help appreciated Mark

2002-08-28 02:09:00 | Hi marks, Is your pinter connected via a scanner ie daiseychained on the parallel port because this is known to cause communication problems between PC and printer see this site www.hp.com HTH PC

2002-08-28 03:38:00 | Try borrowing another cable. Or just unplug it, and plug it in again. Connections ... (used to be the most common fault with computers, until we got Microsoft). (If you buy a new cable, go for the IEEE one {is it 1284, I can never remember} because you will probably need that for the bandwidth required in the cable for your next printer).

2002-08-28 04:26:00 | Also, this printer and cable have been working ok up to this Winblows reload | marks (1656) | |
2002-08-28 04:42:00 | An IEEE 1284 will probably be clearly marked ... (they cost more). The suggestion of unplug/replug is just a "general principles" one: this "wipes" the contacts and makes a better connection. This has been the repair I have carried out for a lot of faults. Poor contacts do happen. I agree the cable is unlikely to have "failed"; unless it has been damaged . (But the "buzzing" is the sort of thing which can happen if the buffer in the printer is overfilled, which can happen if the CPU doen't get told that the buffer is nearly full, and that it should stop sending data. This can be an indication of signals not getting through the cable). Coincidence is often misleading. But the settings for the Printer in Windows should be checked against the manual, too. All we can do is suggest a range of things to look at. We can't use our hammers on your computer. ;-)

2002-08-28 05:17:00 | Yeah, I've already informed the printer of its parentage and made a, possibly rash, remark about it having sex with its mother! I have tried the old cable disconnect/ reconnect trick several times- doesn't seem to make any difference. The buzzing noise you mention is exactly what is happening so I'm wondering if it might be the cable or even the connector in the mobo is faulty. I suppose what I was hoping for was some obscure setting in Winblows that might have caused this but I need to rule out some of the more basic stuff first. This IEEE cable sounds like an investment. Thanks for your help ppl. Any further advice would be welcome. Cheers Mark
