74209 2002-08-27 10:48:00 Summary of My Problems:

I think I have a RAM usage/allocation problem . I have Win98SE, P3-667MHz, 256 SD RAM, IE5 . 5 . and a 20 Gig HD with four partitions for System & applications; and for Data files; & two for GHOST clones of them (but only first utilized last week so I've no good records to fall back on) .

When I try to start Word 2000 it's Logo displays for me . Then I can still move the cursor, but not much more . And the CPU is going flat-out achieving nothing . Last time, Ctrl, Alt, and Del worked after some seconds and I was able to put Word 2000 to bed, but other times . . . well, maybe I did not wait long enough .

One time when Word 2000 closed I was able to try to start Excel 97 and I got "Not enough memory to run this program . Quit one or more programs and then try again" . I tried Ctrl, Alt, & Del to see what was running - but I got "The system is dangerously low in resources! -Would you like to terminate the following application -> Norton System Doctor" .

Another time when Word 2000 had not been 'tested' I was able to open Excel, Picture It!, Adobe Photo Deluxe BE 1 . 1, MS Home Publisher at the same time and then access photos etc . without a sign of a memory problem .

I've had some lost clusters - one NDDUNDO . DAT PNCIUNDO file contained bits of a cluster (that I learned was from the Outlook Express cleanup . log) . Later NDD reported an allocation error . . . in the cleanup . log . This contained six log enteries between 3PM and midnight two days ago - all the same except the last which missed the last five Cleanup records . The file size was 24kB .

I've had warnings of low resources before but it's only in the last week that I've had to reset the PC to continue .

I have MS Office Word 2000, Works 2000, Excel 97 . A few months ago I installed Word 97 in the Data Directory (to see how early a version of Word I could save a file in) . I've wondered if Registry might have linked up with a mix of Word 2000 and Word 97 files of similar name & extension . Now, I am prepared to settle for just a working version of Word 2000!

I hope this is enough for someone to come up with suggestions for me . What is the sure fix? - and what is there that I could try before getting too (that) drastic? Thanks .

74210 2002-08-27 11:13:00 I think your problem will derive from the order that Word was installed. Installing an older version after a newer one is pretty risky.

You may need to uninstall both versions and reinstall 2000, or 97 then 2000

74211 2002-08-27 11:23:00 ok first thing is to clean out the unnessacy apps you have loaded up at startup. norton system doctor is one that can go.

how big are your partitions?

i wonder if you also may have a curupt normal.dot. rename it and office will rebuild it next time you use it.

defraged recently? give diskdoctor a run through as well.

office 2000 has a repair optoin.(add/remove programs)

the catch with office is it intergrates into the os(how many wordprocessors stuff up the network.....grrrrrr MS), so you may need some luck getting rid of word 97.

after you have done a clean up run system file checker.

74212 2002-08-27 22:41:00 To me it sounds like you have a bit of a bung install of WORD.
The fact that it's going hard out trying to load it and then fails, probably points to the fact that a DLL (dynamic Link Library) is corrupt in some way. Of which could be because you have some bad sectors on your harddrive.
When it says you are out of memmory is usually because you are out of RESOURCES not memmory as in RAM. You will loose resources if you were to suddenly shut down an application like WORD as it doesn't let go of all the files it chucked to the resource allocation.

Solution: Uninstall WORD, and then reinstall, or try for a Repair. But before you do that, you should do a thorough scandisk to make sure there are no bad sectors.
Note: Norton System Doctor uses resources itself, disabling this should help. However under normal conditions you should still have plenty of resources to have about 10 IE pages, WORD, & Norton System Doctor. At this stage your computer would probably run slow as it has run out of RAM, but it will still have some RESOURCES left.

In a sense, you do .

Do you have a lot of TrueType fonts installed? Windows 98 doesn't like that .

It also sounds like you have munged installations of office, with conflicting DLLs .

QAD solution: back up all the data you want to keep, wipe the disk, and reinstall Windows . For long-term happiness, especially if you want to run multiple applications, consider using Windows XP, maybe with an additional 256MB RAM added .
