74182 2002-08-27 08:22:00 i need help! i am suddenly getting strange links appearing on web pages that aren't from the web site. they appear highlighted in yellow. examples are ; the words 'training workshop' are linked to an online college, the words 'family travel' are linked to an online airline, the words 'similar interest' are linked to matchmaker.com - and so on and so forth.

it's like someone has hacked into my browser and inserted the unwanted links. i am also getting an alert popping up that says my ip address is being broadcast and to click on a link to download some free software that will save me from this peril.

i look forward to your responses
thanks in advance
cheers

74183 2002-08-27 08:54:00 Firstly, the banner that says your IP is being broadcast is AN ADVERTISEMENT! They are trying to sell you software.

You will soon learn that you will get bombarded with these "Banner Ads" and you can use blocking software, but its just as easy to ignore them.

74184 2002-08-27 09:24:00 i think adaware will remove this. its a adware/spyware program. toptext i think its called. it may be in add/remove but it wouldn't hurt to give adaware a run through. adaware is advailable at www.majorgeeks.com and www.lavasoft.com.de(hope that link staill works). tweak'e (174)
74185 2002-08-27 13:19:00 http://www.lavasoftusa.com will if the other link doesn't. Thats the link to the main homepage for ad aware. Also when you download AdAware grab the reference updater which is just a bit further down the list. AdAware works on definiations just like your Anti Virus and needs to be updated to be able to kill the latest spyware. dipstick01 (445)

74187 2002-08-31 04:34:00 Hi Supermum,

On this topic you might want to note some comments I made about the downside of ad-blocking software... it can be very useful, but there you need to be aware of all the issues with it.

See my post here (pressf1.co.nz)

74188 2002-08-31 05:58:00 Actually, I've just had another thought about the highlighted links on web pages that take you off to advertising-related pages/sites.

I seem to dimly recall their used to be a setting on IE that was for 'smart-tagging', which allowed this very thing to happen. From memory, it's a simple matter of finding this setting and turning it off... but I don't remember where to find this. Perhaps others can help with this part???

At least trying searching through the 'help' link and see what you can find there...

Cheers
Kerry
