74133 2002-08-26 23:39:00 WinXP Pro DUN shows a false (and long) password in the password box by default... if changed to the correct password will revert at next dial-up to the false and long one... NAV 2002 finds no viruses and no-one has had access to change settings. How can I wipe (permanantly) this false password.. relative XP newbie so cant hack the Reg etc. doccock (1646)
74134 2002-08-27 00:01:00 firstly check for dailers. look in dailup networking and see if any new entries.

check for anything werid set to run at startup.

hopefully xp still uses the .pwl files, find any pwl files and rename them(add bak). for eg thiscompname.pwl.bak restart and you will need to put in new passwords. hopefully that still works for XP.

74135 2002-08-27 00:03:00 Win XP does this, it adds extra characters to the password field, it does not mean your password is incorrect.
Why worry about it, if you are connecting OK your stored password is correct.

74136 2002-08-27 01:30:00 It only looks like it so that no one really how long your password is. Just ignore it. Big John (551)
74137 2002-08-27 06:17:00 More technical info.

Winxp has a good password encryption (or the best). what it does is that when ever a password is registered to the os, it encrypts it and displays it in not sure how long characters. All passwords in xp will have the same length eventhough they are not that long. this is how the encryption works, so you can't guess the real password is. I think win2k works the same as well. not too sure. never notice it.

74138 2002-08-27 06:28:00 The problem with XP is it has trouble remembering the saved password at times.

It is not uncommon to have to retype it in when you get a failed login with a password error.
