74550 2002-08-28 11:21:00 I intend upgrading my PC shortly but am reluctant to use XP. I intended to use WIN 2000 if possible but was told today it was more of a commercial OS. Can someone clarify this. Is WIN 2000 ok for the normal household PC
Many thanx...........again

74551 2002-08-28 11:50:00 Not sure why you are reluctant about XP?
W2k is the choice of business, they take a bit of time to migrate but XP is good for home use.

Depends on your needs, if you have a lot of old software then maybe not, but keep in mind W2k and XP are built on the same core.

I have used all systems and find XP the most stable. W2k and XP Pro are a bit top heavy with security and permissions, but XP Home is OK for general use..

Any driver issues will be with XP and WS2k much the same.

But then again I have only been using PCs for 20+ years....

74552 2002-08-28 22:29:00 Is fine for home use ,just be sure to have about 256 megs of ram .
I still use 98 sec edition as it is set up the way i like it and it does all that i want it to do including playing some of my older games etc

74553 2002-08-28 23:06:00 Windows 2000 is the best OS microsoft ever made IMHO. I have been running it on my PC's for quite some time and have not had any trouble with drivers yet. Mine are primarily gaming machines (in a permanent lan at home) and I will never go back to a DOS based OS.

There is no doubt 2000 is a commercial OS by design but all that really means is that its administration tools are fantastic and the networking stack is great. 2000 has been around long enough now that the techs in the wild have worked out all the best tweaks and its just a case of finding and applying them to speed up the PC considerably to the point mine perform in games as well as on 98SE (which is still regarded as the best gaming OS).

XP home edition which would be the more likely version for you to buy does not have the depth of 2000 as its more for home users who know nothing but XP Pro version is much more like 2000 as far as the ability to tweak and control it. I have had a good look at XPHome but the automation and integrated extras are IMHO a nightmare and best worth avoiding till the wild techs work out how to beat it into user friendly shape.

74554 2002-08-28 23:33:00 i would have to agree with john 100% :)

w2k was more designed for the office than the home, wheres 98se/ME was designed for the home. gaming wise 98se is proberly more compatiable than w2k.

however XP is designed based on w2k but with 98se multimedia/gaming abilities added in.

once XP sp1 comes out XP will be the way to go.
