74474 2002-08-28 07:00:00 Everytime I make a connection to the internet, my PC tells me~26.6 or 28kps. I spoke to my friends and they tell me this is very slow. I have W-XP and my modem is 56X or V.92HAM Fax modem I believe. The PC is 8mths old, and have connected at two locations in Auckland and I have the same connection Kps. I believe I have never been connected any faster than 28.8. Please someone tell me why or is there a way to improve this. Cheers olento (1662)
74475 2002-08-28 09:16:00 Hi olento,

Your not the only one, I suffer from the useless connection speeds as well. First have a read of the FAQ (pressf1.co.nz)

What ISP are you with?

I don't suppose you PC is from the PC Company by any chance?

74476 2002-08-28 11:00:00 Hi Sam H. - I am with Telstar clear. What is FAQ? Anyway good guess! My PC is from the PC company. Something I should know here? olento (1662)
74477 2002-08-28 11:40:00 Check in the advanced settings of your modem, that no-one has put the string "+ms=v34".If that is there, take it out. This will limit you to 33600bps,so have a look, just in case.

74478 2002-08-28 12:29:00 Thanks Peter, the modem is set at "+ms=v90...48000. I am not sure what that means. olento (1662)
74479 2002-08-28 13:33:00 Hi Olento, i see you are in the auckland area - i am rural and still get on average about 42kps which is good i believe for rural, and i am on a machine about the same age and same modem as you i believe too!(pc co. too). Anyway back to you - have you tried using somebody elses connection with a different isp on your computer, as this would tell you if its just Telstra's normal speed or your modem?? The fact that you have connected at 2 different locations in auckland and still get the same speed says that it is either your isp or modem and not your phone line. Maybe also give the pc co a ring as it should still be under warranty - you may even just need new drivers or something. Also are your friends with telstra where they are getting better speeds or another isp??
And as to your question on what are FAQ's - that is frequently asked questions (i just noticed you are new to F1 - so welcome and i hope we can be of some assistance) - there is a FAQ page or if you click on where Sam used the word FAQ (in blue) in his reply it is a link to the the FAQ page OR look at the top menu and its there top right - with lots of good tips in for common problems.
Anyway hope that you may get something from the FAQ's or somebody else may know if there are any other tweaks in the modem settings.
But i would give the pc co. a ring if its still under warranty!! :-)

74480 2002-08-28 21:07:00 That setting limits your connection to 48000bps and in theory should work but I have found the V92 modem does not always like this setting and can sometimes cause problems connecting.

I suggest you try it without any extra settings as being in Auckland extra settings should not be necessary.

Start/ control panels/ phone and modem options
Click on Modem tab and then Properties at the bottom
Click on Modem tab and change Max port speed to 57600
Click on Advanced
In the Extra initialization commands box delete all settings
Click OK and OK again

Start/Connect to/ Show all connections
Right click on the connection icon and click on Properties
Under the modem click on Configure
Maximum speed select 57600
Click OK and OK again

Restart the computer and check if that improves things.

74482 2002-08-29 06:17:00 Thanks Jim, I have tried what you suggested and have restarted the computer twice - but still the same speed connection. Do I have to change back to the original settings? Hey, is it co-incidental that outlool express seems unable to open up?

Thanks-olento

74483 2002-08-29 10:51:00 Just had a thought. Is your internet line a second line,or the main one.If you have 2 lines try the other line, and see if it is the same.If you only have one line, you may be on what is called 1+1,or 0+2 line, and these will only give you 31200bps max.Check with Telecom and they should be able to tell you if this is the case.If you are on a proper line, get Telecom to do a line check. There may be a line fault causing the problem.
