74297 2002-08-28 01:11:00 My computer is currently running Windows ME.If was to upgrade to XP will this overide ME and i would lose everything saved?. I have only 64RAM is this enough to drive XP? trevor (1594)
74298 2002-08-28 01:26:00 XP will not run satisfactorily on 64 Meg. (if at all)
If you upgrade, you wont (necessarily) lose your data but will need to re-install your programs, as they will be most unlikely to run until you do.

The XP upgrade CD has a utility on it that tells you whats not compatable in software and hardware.

You need at least 128 meg of ram, I have 1 pc here on 128 and its quite useable.

74299 2002-08-28 01:46:00 I'm always a fan of the "If ain't broken, why fix it?" school of thought... upgrading is a nightmare in itself and I guarantee you will have more problems than not should you choose to upgrade as opposed to doing a reformat and full reinstall.

64 meg is waaaaay to low as well. I doubt if XP would even LET you install with that amount of memory! Grin and bear it... XP isn't the be all and end all of operating systems... I for one trialled XP Pro, couldn't stand it and have gone back to 98SE and plan on sticking with it.

74300 2002-08-28 02:06:00 do you need to upgrade to XP?

i think your $$$$ would be better spend on upgradeing your hardware. exspeacially the RAM. 64meg is small even for winME. 128 at least, 196 works sweet with winME or 256meg which will allow for a XP upgrade later on.

btw is your proccessor fast enough to handle XP? can you get XP drivers for all your hardware?

74301 2002-08-28 02:17:00 I upgraded 3 machines from ME to XP, and all went sweetly, wouldnt dream of ever going back. godfather (25)
74302 2002-08-28 04:51:00 So there you have it... 3 ppl against an upgrade, and 1 for... ;)

74303 2002-08-28 05:02:00 Make that 2 for the upgrade if processor and memory (upgrade) can handle. Capital (813)
74304 2002-08-28 05:05:00 But with memory at $59 for 128 MB ... do a memory upgrade anyway. (That hurts much less than $120 for 1 MB, which is what my fuirst memory upgrade cost in 1991).

Then see if you want to "upgrade".

74305 2002-08-28 07:35:00 My sister had a computer with WinME and 64MB ram. She upgraded the ram by a further 128MB in anticipation of XP, but found that ME ran so well with the additional ram, she stayed with that OS,

74306 2002-08-28 08:37:00 Just as a matter of interest,What would be the smallest Proccessor

that could handle XP Home version?

ie;Pentium2/266Mhz with 256Mb ram?

Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)
