2002-08-31 04:30:00 Telecom have a test site for testing data transfer rates. The URL is 192.168.100.100 .A new dialer will have to be created, double click my computer, open dial up networking, make new connection, these are for Win9x.The dial up number is 087308000.The user name and passwords are test1 all in lowercase. When doing download tests(50K or 500K) press control refresh to reload the page.Once download tests have been done go back 1 page and GET MODEM STATISTICS pay particular attention to the blocks sent and blocks resent, the lower the ratio of resends the better. This site will give you the data transfer rates, loss, errors and a number of other measurements. Data transfers of 4kBytes for a dial up modem is ok.After one test is done, start unplugging phones one by one and then redo the download tests.A loudspeaker phone we had dropped the data transfer by 2kBytes/sec so that is now unplugged while we are on line.
The simple alternative is to use OPERA as a browser. OPERA has several advantages over explorer, the first is the ease at which pop ups and pop unders can be controlled,pressF12 and tick block pop ups.The second is that it shows the data transfer rate on every page you download. After using OPERA I am sure you will not use explorer again.

2002-08-31 04:39:00 A 0+2 will give you a data transfer rate of 4kBytes/sec,with the advantage of very little attenuation.0+2 are digital streams to the remote unit then analogue. The RU is going to be a lot closer than your nearest exchange which could be particularly helpful if living out in the country.Jetstart is an option if close enough to an exchange(less than about 6km)which will give up to 16kBytes/sec. anthony851 (1663)
2002-08-31 10:43:00 thank you, i'll give that a go. olento (1662)
2002-08-31 11:32:00 Because you are on a 0+2,you can't have Jetstart.To have Jetstream/start,you must have a standard POTS line(plain old telephone service)on copper,without any pair gain equipment.

2002-08-31 22:39:00 If you are on an adsl capable exchange you will be upgraded.0+2 is used when there are not enough cable pairs. anthony851 (1663)
2002-08-31 22:42:00 Have you tried test1?When you do check in the modem statistic that v90 is detected. anthony851 (1663)
2002-09-01 13:32:00 I have gone as far as making a new connection and have connected to test 1. But, that is as far as I can go and understand. The download test and the modem stats is a bit hard for me to understand and locate where are. The unplugging of the phones while still connected has actully disconnected me of the net alltogether. But, the data send-resend figures, are they the same as sent - resend? Here they are anway. I got these figures by right clicking on the little pc icon that comes up when you are connected to the net, (sent-resent- (3210-834), No errors and no compression. But, I have a feeling that this is not where I need to go. olento (1662)
2002-09-01 13:42:00 I am sorry, I was meant to say"sent and received" when I talked about those ( may erraneous) figures I mentioned. olento (1662)
2002-09-01 19:33:00 After you have logged on to the TEST1 site,it says on the hmepage to click here to continue. On the 2nd page choose a 50k download(this is the smallest). It will then send you 50000 bytes. From here go back 1 page and GET MODEM STATISTICS. anthony851 (1663)
