XP firewall setup guide
Axcel 216 has posted up a guide to Firewalls in Windows XP (members.aol.com). here's part of the guide:
ICF features: built-in internet based intrusion prevention tool designed for users of broadband (digital xDSL, Cable, Satellite modems) and dial-up (analog modems) connections who are unaware of intrusion threats and of the need for protection, enabled on a per-user interface (check box UI) basis, extends Windows XP NAT (Network Address Translation) driver + advanced features: ICMP blocking options and activity logging.
Default settings are only for outbound, and ICF blocks only the few ports/protocols Microsoft deems unsafe, which in default mode is way too unsafe for every day browsing. :(
Start by making rules (as you should with any decent FW) for each app, domain, protocol, port etc, separately for outbound and/or inbound, respectively.
A rule set does one of two things: (1) blocks [disables] or (2) unblocks [enables] a particular app/port/protocol/domain/IP/server/computer/etc from/to access(ing) the internet as a whole, or targeted to one or more specific internet ports/domains/servers/computers.
This is a pretty comprehensive guide that shows you how to get the best setup out of the inbuilt XP firewall, so it is well worth a look.

AMD to target Intel 32-bit, not Itanium, with Opteron
AMD is apparently going to aim its 64-bit Opteron processor (codenamed Hammer) at Intel's 32-bit market instead of 64-bit vendors. This snippet gives details on the reasoning behind the move:
The vendor's Opteron architecture, previously codenamed Hammer, will offer customers the choice of 32-bit or 64-bit operation. The architecture will be the newest entrant to the 64-bit space after Intel, which launched its Itanium architecture in 2001, but which has yet to pick up steam in the market.

Patrick Moorhead, AMD's vice president for customer advocacy, charged that Itanium does not represent an easy transition for customers moving from 32-bit architectures. The current depressed economy makes it even less likely that customers will take a gamble on an untried architecture, he argued.

AMD claims that by offering the ability to run existing 32-bit applications, without tweaking, while also offering customers the ability to run more powerful 64 applications when they are ready, Opteron is a more palatable proposition for companies looking to make the leap to 64-bit.
This could be a very canny move by AMD to still dominate the end user market while filtering into the higher end 64-bit market slowly, thus getting a greater slice of both pies.

AMD Announces Athlon MP 2200+
AMD has announced the release of the Athlon MP 2200+ processor based on the .13 micron architecture. Here's part of the announcement:
SUNNYVALE, CA -- August 27, 2002 --AMD today introduced the AMD Athlon MP processor 2200+, built on AMD’s state-of-the-art 0.13-micron copper process technology, to provide the high performance and reliability demanded by businesses for their servers and workstations. AMD’s 0.13-micron manufacturing technology allows processors to achieve higher performance while lowering power requirements, all on a smaller die size.
Today’s announcement marks the third and final member of the AMD Athlon processor family to transition to 0.13-micron copper process technology. AMD Athlon processors for mobile and desktop systems transitioned to this advanced technology earlier in 2002.
“Business users are demanding higher performance to increase productivity and our 0.13- micron copper process technology allows AMD to make that a reality,” said Ed Ellett, vice president of marketing for AMD’s Computation Products Group. “In addition, IT managers tell us they need longer product life cycles to get them through the tight IT budgets facing many enterprises today. With the AMD Athlon MP processor’s stable Socket A infrastructure, AMD can help lower total cost of ownership and protect a company’s technology investment.”
