75071 2002-08-30 09:02:00 Service Pack 1 is due out either late next week, or early the week after for Windows XP. Now what I want to know is if it'll be available on CD from Microsoft in NZ (I've only seen it talked about being available from MS in the US - the NZ MS site doesn't say anything about it that I can find), and what the cost will be, if there is one?

Any ideas?

Mike.

75073 2002-08-30 10:15:00 How big is it. It's only around the ~100MB level I think. Even I'd be willing to download that and send it to you........ yes I'm on dial-up as well.

*looks at second phone line* - muahahahahaha

75074 2002-08-30 11:16:00 No JM, I'm pretty sure I read it on one of tweak'e's news posts but it's something like 500mb .

I remember that because I was telling people how the service pack was going to be way more than my Win95 (and possibly Win98) installations alone .

How long would that take you to download then?

75076 2002-08-30 13:59:00 WinXP SP1 is free Mike .

You can either download it for free when its available from MS website or order it on CD which will cost you a little bit .

And if you Reallyyy eager to try it out then try this final beta build Ver
1105 . 1 ( . 9down . com/down/9Down/xpsp1_1105-9Down . rar" target="_blank">warez . 9down . com)

Of course if you try doin it on 56k like me then yeah definitely use Getright or something . It Took Me about 14hrs to Download!!!! the 133MB file:D

The final release is most likely to be Ver 1106 to be released next week .
Mostly the SP deals with the bugs it claims to wipe out .

You can also download the individual files from MS website to give the same effect . But yeah it adds the funtionality of choosing diff default prog as in Win2k SP3 and adds support for near future technology for tablet PC / Windows Media Center Edition and has Direct X 9

Oh yeah i found this interesting to read . Its from Mr Toms website and url changes hence i am just Cut Pasting here :)

Microsoft has introduced its Windows XP Service Pack 1 which, according to Microsoft’s documentation, is “aimed at ensuring licensed customers receive full benefits… product updates and Access to Windows XP Updates . ” What Microsoft XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) is really designed to do is “to make it more difficult for those who pirate software to steal these same benefits .

A summary of SP1’s changes from Service Packs of the past includes:

(1) When XP SP1 installation is attempted, SP1 will not load with previous “well known” pirated product keys, and will further verify the product key against a current product key list

(2) Once a hardware change is made to a PC that requires re-activation of Windows XP, licensed users will have a grace period of 3 days (previously required immediately) to re-activate Windows XP

(3) SP1 includes a Volume License Key (VLK) encryption that is added to unattended setups of Windows XP

(4) A product key used to install Windows XP will become part of the Installation ID for all future activations after SP1

(5) The entire product key will be sent upon Internet log in/activation, while a hash value of the product key will be sent upon telephone installation

(6) “Fixes” to software piracy cracks will be embedded in SP1 to prohibit SP1 activation

(7) Installations of Windows XP that have been repaired/patched by a crack must be completely reactivated upon SP1 installation .

Reports have been coming in from retailers and companies all over the world to us saying that Microsoft (sometimes via the SPA) has been aggressive in auditing (or sending letters threatening to audit) them to make sure that are fully compliant with Microsoft licenses .

This has led to a mad rush for many companies and users to "true up" now or be forced to deal with the consequences later . Many are convinced that this is nothing more than a strong arm harassment tactic by Microsoft to raise their stock price and teach the government a lesson . No matter, Microsoft is going after these missed profits and unhappy or not customers are paying the price to get legal .

Personally, I can't wait to see the expressions on all of the faces of those running illegal copies who happen to have auto updated engaged, if and when they start forcing Service Pack 1 down to all of the XP machines and one by one these systems stop working or need to be reactivated . We are not going to say that we told you so, but when product activation was first announced, we were sure that this was going to be a possibility as soon as the cracks arrived so publicly on the Internet .

Next will be Microsoft's master plan to start to rent the use of software to users on a per term basis . Yep, this is where I think this is headed folks, so don't be surprised if this is the next move in the game .

Cheers

that's really slow :) must be from a slow server or something.

Nah, I could download it - I'm not against that; I was just wanting the actual release CD from MS and want to know the approximate price I'll have to pay for it to make up my mind whether it's worth it or not.

75078 2002-08-30 22:40:00 When MS upgraded 98 to SE they offered a disc on their US site of the upgrade but it was not mentioned on the NZ website at the time. I found though when I rang them after official release of the upgrade that they did have it here and it cost me $25 for the disc.

The MS site in the US says the SP1 disk will be available for US$9.95 (which is the same price the 98SE upgrade disc was advertised for in the US) so I expect that yes MSNZ will supply the disk and it should cost around $25.

75079 2002-08-30 23:19:00 Hi all, a small question i had with regard to the sp1 pack (as i haven't done an sp yet on any computer). Will some/most of the things in the sp pack be things that we have already been offered on windows update + alot of other goodies and if so, what about the updates we have already done that are on the sp1 pack, will they be overwritten by the sp? (ignorant in this area) J ZEP (336)
75080 2002-08-30 23:23:00 oops - forgot something else, with regard to sp packs - If say for instance in office there are 2 sp packs i.e sp1 & sp2, do you need to get them both or will what is in sp1 be in sp2? So I would only need sp2?
Thanks for any advice.
