2002-08-30 07:34:00 | I'm trying to fix a friends pc for him and I'm affriad its got me stumped. History: Its an HP Pavilion 7400 desktop that he purchased about five years ago, one of those off the shelf package deals with a printer included ( HP deskjet 670c). My friend tells me that everything was ok with it untill about two years ago the printer ran out of ink so he change the cartride as per instructions in the manual and he hasn't been able to print anything since. He has tried the printer in several other pc's and it works fine, he has also unistalled the printer and driver several times in his pc but still it won't work. Some of the Error Messages: One of several different error messages are displayed which include: Communication error! Paper Out! and : Printer was not switched off using the power button, reboot and try again. I fixed it....???yeah right...: The first thing I did was unistall the printer and reinstall using the latest driver I could find at the HP site. This seemed to have done the trick untill about a week later I recieved a phone call from my friend to inform me that the printer wasn't working again :0(Oh Joy!!) Reluctant to contaminate my house again with "HP Karma" I talked him through the proceedure of unistalling and reinstalling the latest driver over the phone and the problem was fixed :0) Born Lucky... A week later still my friend purchased a copy of win98se and guess who he wanted to install it for him..... offcourse I couldn't wait to get my hands on that lovely machine again so I insisted he bring it round imediatly, I'll be waiting at the front gate doing my best to contain my excitment....(With large hammer clench tightly behind back...hehe...lol) Format C:/S.....("Do ya feel lucky punk? well do ya?) As the board has on board sound and video I prepared for the worst. I backed up the entire drive to two different hdd's, one as a file and the other as a bootable replica using the Xcopy32 x:\ *.* y:\/s/e/r/c/v/h/k/y command from windows on my machine as I don't have Ghost or any other such program. (Yes I'm poor and unfortunate....:0( Happy with the backups but still uneasy I begain the install... "Win98se rocks!!"... To my surprise (and relief) Windows installed all the drivers except for the Modem and the Printer which I installed myself. "Bugga!!" Yes as those of you quick of wit and acustomed to the wicked irony of life have probably guessed the bloddy printer won't print. "I want my life back..." I've tried unistalling reinstalling the printer and driver. Every single lead and connection I own an any that were donated by those that pittied me. Two different printers both of which work perfectly on this machine (The "Pavilion 7400" Widow maker ). I've tried all the Printer port settings in the bios, but nothing works!! What really pickles my onion is that when I try the HP 670c in my own pc using the same driver it works like a champion. I hear Florida's nice at this time of year... It seems like I've spent a lifetime on this heap of SH#@, (and this post now that I think of it..lol) Can some kind person please help me fix it, destroy it without leaving any trace and blame, or hide me in their basement and not tell anyone where I am? I can cook.....

2002-08-30 08:43:00 | A serial to parallel adapter should get around that problem, though. Unless of course you mean that particular printer doesn't have the option of using a serial connection....... | Gorela (901) | |
2002-08-30 09:18:00 | You can cook? You can fix puters and build them too? Are you good at washing and cleaning? Well then, I don't have a basement, but there's a nice little shed out the back that might do... I won't tell anyone you are there. :-)

2002-08-30 09:28:00 | Still have the printer hooked up to my own pc and now it won't print. Several different error messages including: Not communicating, Paper out, Not powered off properly. Point of interest: Noticed a difference between printed test pages, when it prints properly it prints the test page that has the Win98 logo at the top followed by a list of the driver files for the printer. When it dosen't print some times it will print part of a different looking testpage(or it spits the paper out blank). The page has "HP Deskjet" in the middle of the page and part of what appears to be a picture or logo underneath. Also the printer keeps trying to print this page several times and is hard to stop.

2002-08-30 09:33:00 | hehe......Thankyou so much......as soon as I finish with this hammer I'll be on my way. Do you like Itallian?? | dchip (1426) | |
2002-08-30 09:38:00 | Careful! That shed out the back could be a recently vacated long-drop toilet! You have been warned. | Gorela (901) | |
2002-08-30 09:43:00 | eww...maybe not then... although its just the place for this "HP" Gear...lol:0) | dchip (1426) | |
2002-08-30 10:02:00 | Shame on you Gorela, it is not a long drop! It's a nice little garden shed. In fact, if dchip is that good a cook, cleaner and washer I'll even give up my bed and go and sleep out there myself! Dunno what hubby would say though... :D dchip: I'll eat Italian as long as I don't have to speak or pronounce it. :D Actually, I've got one of those printers and it generally behaves itself. I can't think why the one you're trying to fix is like it is. Those test pages that you are doing can be done without the printer actually connected to the PC so if they aren't printing properly then it can't be the PC. It would be the printer itself which is stuffed. Maybe the printer has been dropped at some stage and had its brains shaken?
