75001 2002-08-30 06:35:00 Ultracrepidate

Criticism of matters beyond the sphere of one's own knowledge.

Not that it happens often of course, but it can be fun when it does.

Cheers

75002 2002-08-30 06:58:00 I think I do that a lot.
Didn't even know the word for it.
Excellent.

75003 2002-08-30 07:12:00 In that case I am sure we are all ultracrepidarian godfather (25)
75004 2002-08-30 09:20:00 Billy--- are you sure the spelling is correct? dum dugie (432)
75005 2002-08-30 09:29:00 I was going to say that I was the Queen of ultracrepidates but the word 'criticism' stopped me in my tracks.

That's not quite the same as bluffing your way through things you know nothing about, which is my forte. :D

The spelling is correct dum dugie and I've just discovered Billy's possible source for all these weird and wonderful words he dreams up for us: is it here (phrontistery.50megs.com) Billy?

75006 2002-08-30 09:54:00 Jeez Susan!

Why don't you just rain on my parade :(

You are partly correct, but I have a range of sources.

Finding lists is easy, the hard part is finding the right word.

Oh well, back to work.

Cheers

75007 2002-08-30 10:21:00 Oh sorry Billy, I didn't mean to rain on your parade. :_|

It's not really raining though, 'cos like you say the hardest part is finding the best words. That's not easy - it would take me a whole month to do that, not just a week like it takes you.

I suppose you are going to hunt down a horrible word to describe a party-pooper (me) for next week's WFTWE now. :-(

:D :D

75008 2002-08-30 10:52:00 Nah Susan, no worries! B-)

Bonds forged in the fires of the Candy Lounge are not that easily broken.

Might try and find a suitable fun word for you though!]:)

75009 2002-08-30 11:20:00 Billy,

Do you not perhaps feel that ultracrepidate could be more sesquipedalian than required? (A lovely self-defining word - I met it first in 1959. (and yes, I'm old and my bones crepitate when I ambulate.)) :)

Cheers,
Alan

75010 2002-08-31 04:11:00 Well Alan, I dunno really ?:|

After antidisestablishmentarianism and supercalifragilisticexpialidocious were grudgingly accepted into the mainstream lexicon, somehow the concept of sesquipedalianism just didn't seem quite as important.

What matters more in modern times is whether a word sounds good and its applications are apt, or even mildly amusing.

But then, I could be wrong :p

Time will be the final arbiter, so until then WFTWE will continue to challenge and occasionally amuse.

Cheers
