74935 2002-08-29 11:34:00 Converting XBox data To PC data
CD Freaks has posted word of a new tool available that allows the conversion of XBox Data into Windows .exe files. This is a very early version and is still under development and when fully complete it will effectively become an Xbox emulator. Here's a bit about it:
The process of converting an xbox executable (.xbe) to a windows "portable executable" (PE, [.exe]) has been a success. despite rumors floating around, .xbe -] [/url] .exe converstion is entirely possible, and is already being done. the problem is that a lot of work is necessary to fullfill the environmental expectations of an xbox executable. most importantly, kernel exports and certain hardware are expected, and must be emulated. the kernel emulation will be done by wrapping around existing win32 api. this is explained in the progress section.

Top Gun shoot-out, P4-2800 vs Athlon XP 2600+
Tom's Hardware has posted up a shoot-out between the two top guns from Intel and AMD, the P4-2.8 and the Ayhlon 2600+. He puts them through the ringer and spits out a winner. Here's a snippet:
Recent events in the world of CPUs have been comparable to a duel on a lonely German autobahn on a warm summer night: the big Mercedes, equipped with all options, drives on at consistently high speed and thus manages to remain in the lead. Suddenly, unexpectedly, the Ferrari (fitted with standard options only, no aircon) comes up from behind and overtakes the Mercedes, and both cars jockey for the lead.
It's a close race - sometimes the Ferrari overtakes the Mercedes and vice versa. We're talking figuratively about Intel P4/2533 and AMD Athlon XP 2600+, of course - and now Intel introduces a new model that reaches new extremes in speed, taking full advantage of PC1066. And so, the Mercedes gradually manages to pull ahead of the Ferrari. The AMD XP's recent triumph was short-lived.

SP1 not out till next week
Microsoft has announced that XP SP1 will not be out this week, but will be released sometime in the next ten days, to comply with the US court ruling. Microsoft in the same announcement also showed off some of the highlight features in the service pack. Here's the meat of the announcement:
XP SP1 includes Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1), support for USB 2.0, a number of security and bug fixes, along with the new Set Program Access and Defaults UI component, which was required by Microsoft's DOJ settlement proposal. Set Program Access and Defaults lets users choose whether to hide certain XP middleware applications, including Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, and Microsoft's Virtual Machine for Java. Third party applications can register with the UI and have their icons appear in a list of available middleware applications. This will let users choose which applications appear in the XP UI, Microsoft says.

Furthermore, XP SP1 will usher in the release of two new XP versions, XP Media Center Edition, which will power new Media Center PCs, and XP Tablet PC Edition, which are designed for a new generation of portable computers that can be used with a stylus and active digitizer screen. XP Media Center will be available only with a new HP PC in the US, while a variety of PC makers will release Tablet PCs in the coming months.
XP SP1 will be made available as a free download for existing XP users and starting in October, all retail XP packages will be switched over to SP1 versions so that new buyers get the updates immediately.
