75045 2002-08-30 10:39:00 hehe ...just 'cause I can cook Italian doesn't mean I can spell it.

Please pardon my ignorance but how do you print a test page without being connected to the PC, this printer only has the power and paper feed buttons???

Could most definitely be a hardware problem with the printer itself if so there's not much I can do about that...Or is there.....now where did I put that hammer?

75046 2002-08-30 10:42:00 Its normally by holding down a button while you turn the power on....you dont have many to choose from.

Also check that the carriage guide rod is clean and lightly oiled - can give "interesting results"

75047 2002-08-30 10:55:00 Gee I'm good to you. Your Italian cooking had better be worth it...

Verifying the printer is working

Before installing the printer software, make sure your printer is set up and working properly by performing a printer self-test.

1. To print a one-page self-test pattern, with the computer turned on (oops, it does have to be connected but no drivers need to be installed) and the printer's power light lit (ie the bottom button), while holding down the power button, tap the resume button (ie the top button) once.

2. Check out the results! (A page gets printed with the HP propaganda spiel)

The manual also says that a bi-directional HP IEEE-1284 Compliant Parallel Interface cable is recommended. My printer won't work without one of these bi-directional cables and it has to be properly fitted with no loose connections, or else.

godfather's point about the carriage getting stuck could be right too.

75050 2002-08-30 11:51:00 Jumpin Jellfish.......It's works!!!!!!.....Happy Happy Joy Joy:0)

I gave it a clean and put a bit of oil on the guide-rod (only oil I had was Olive oil...hehe...lol..well it works with sticky pasta so I thought, printer , pasta, hmm both p'words so they're related..yep that'll do me)

Printed the test page and it kept spitting out them out like lemmings so I had to switch the damn thing off to save the rainforests and all that...

Plugged the little fizza into the mate's confussion box and away it went...bugga me!!

Now it prints like champion and if it gets hot I can chuck on a steak!!

Thanks to all the great people at pcworld that took the time to offer help and share a giggle or two.

Till next time......:0)

75054 2002-08-31 20:42:00 Gidday,
Yeh I used to own a 670c, and it too after a few months decided
to be a pain by not printing etc.

it turned out that the 670c drivers (which installed off 3 floppy discs) where not being accepted properly by the computer, and no amount of uninstalling or installing helped at all.

Hewlett Packard, informed me that the drivers, 550c, and 672c,
also work on the 670c printer, of which I found the 550c finally got it going with no problems after that.

The 550c and 672c drivers should be already on the computer, as they
come with windows, so its just a matter of uninstalling the 670c drivers,
and using the windows add printer wizard, to install the other driver.

I also did a search of windows, after I uninstalled the 670c driver to make sure, most remants of the drivers had gone, and restarted before installing the 550c driver.

good luck,
Bob
