It is too. Grrrrrrrr. Try this (www.dse.co.nz) one then.

This (www.dse.co.nz) one?
Susan B (19)
74962 2002-08-29 22:52:00 Well, I thought it was the single wheel A$ at $40, but probably was the DSE one at $38.

$38 is a good price for optical.

And yes, my one (actually I bought 2) is the A4 dual wheel, as in your first link. I think when I got it they were in their "Trade Talk" mailer that comes out every 3 months or so.

They are quite good to use, but SWMBO's desk has a dark inset leather top, and it wont work on that, you need a sheet of paper on it

74963 2002-08-29 22:58:00 I've currently got a MS Intellimouse 1 . 1 with a ball and single wheel . An optical mouse would be good but do you find the second wheel and the other buttons really useful or do you hardly use them?

I'm not sure that the extras would be beneficial to me, but like a lot of things, you don't know until you've tried them then sometimes find you wouldn't be without them once you've got them .

74964 2002-08-29 23:28:00 Actually the second wheel is as much a nuisance as a benefit.

Its great in excel, for l-r scrolling.

In other programs that dont support l-r scrolling it is a nuisance, as it gets bumped and takes your cursor back.

74965 2002-08-30 00:13:00 Susan re extra buttons etc - see my post above . I think that the extra scroll wheel is a bit of a waste of time, but the two extra buttons are excellent, and I hate using a mouse that doesn't have them .

I look really silly trying to press the sides of my mouse at uni which doesn't have the buttons :D

74966 2002-08-30 00:37:00 OK guys, heres my two bobs worth . . . . . .

I won a MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer a month or so ago . Used it for 3 weeks, then went back to my bog-standard Logitech wheel mouse .

I find the Logitech far more responsive, and although the cord is a bit of a pain now and again, prefer it to the MS mouse .

BALDY :-)
P/S: After reading the comments about the surface the optical works best on, might give it another try on a lighter coloured mouse pad .

74967 2002-08-30 01:20:00 I still love my A4 single scroll wheel optical mouse :)

The mouse pad I found works best with it is a light navy blue in colour but it is a fabric type surface NOT plastic which is what I beleive was giving me problems when I first got the mouse. I think the light in the room was reflecting through the shiny mouse pad surface and making it hard for the pickups to read the laser.

I fired off an email to A4 asking about it and received a reply in 3 days, this amazed me as the site was obviously in china and my hopes of help and assistance were not the greatest. I have pasted the email at the bottom here.

Subject: A4 tech optical mouse
Last week I purchased a SWOP-35 optical mouse to replace my ball mouse that had finally died. After installing the drivers etc from the disk that came with the mouse I then went to the website and downloaded the latest driver for the mouse. For the first few days all was fantastic then I started to notice that my mouse pointer on screen was shaking while the mouse and the desk it is on was still and untouched. This only seemed to happen on occasion until 2 days ago when the mouse pointer started to jump around the screen and head in opposite directions to what I was wanting to go. At first I thought this might be a software issue so I unloaded all games etc that carried video/mouse drivers and different mouse icon symbols. After reloading the latest mouse drivers and video drivers for my system I noticed things improved for a while until the pointer started to quiver again. I tried changing my mouse pad and have even tried using the mouse direct on the desk surface and all these seem to alleviate the problem for a short time then it starts up again.

and the reply

hi
1.maybe there is something wrong with the driver , please try to uninstall the previous mouse driver and install
the driver sending to you .
2.you should disable the internal mouse in CMOS in your laptop (notebook) if your computer is laptop/notebook PC and if you
let this mouse work on it and via ps/2 port .
3.anyway , please pay attention to the following points:
1). the optical mouse requires a suitable mouse-pad strictly.it requires smooth and monochrome mousepad,
better is pure blue or green one , white or multicolour one is unavailable.
2). your mouse is optical mouse ,so you shouldn't put radio-equipment and similar one around the mouse , it
will interfere the function of mouse .
3). sometimes check your computer to see if it is creepage , if so the computer should be grounded
(connect to the earth with cable).creepage will interfere your mouse and kill its life-span .
best regards!

They had also attached the latest driver for me to install also

Great service I thought and the translation came through not too bad either. lol :D

74968 2002-08-30 01:41:00 Hi Susan,it was the double scroll wheel one she saw in The Warehouse Stationary shop for $60.00. Neil McC (178)
74969 2002-08-30 06:15:00 Thanks for the info guys . Good of you to share those tips dippy, lots of people will find that handy .

I think I'll swing by the Warehouse Stationery and Dick Smiths soon and take some of those mice for a test drive .

Some mice fit my paw better than others but now that I know everyone likes their opticals I'll stick to the gelded ones . :D

74970 2002-08-30 08:15:00 I have used my a4 optical on all surfaces, and it always works.

I can even get it to work (just) by placing it on my monitor screen and moving it about!!

Works on bare skin, shiny book covers, fabric, wood, magazine covers (PC WORLD!!). The only thing I can't get it to work on is a glass window (mirror works , but is a little dodgy).
