74868 2002-08-30 01:02:00 Excellent, Baldy! Because there's going to be a pop-quiz later!! hehe

No, seriously, we try to encourage our advertisers to make the ads as relevant and useful as possible, so that they are as much of interest and use to you, the site visitor, as the site content. Hopefully that means it works for everyone.

And sometimes we do try new things (like the iPaq campaign), which sometimes back-fire, but ad campaigns usually have strict limitations to ensure we don't put you guys off our site.

Hopefully we get it right most of the time. We try to keep the advertising as unobtrusive as possible, which is not easy when people have different browsers, versions of browsers, with different settings. Not to mention the other apps (firewalls, content filters, cookie crushers, etc), that can make perfectly normal campaigns do weird things.

I guess life would be a lot easier if we could suss out the type of things you really want to see... that way the advertisers can make their ads even more relevant and useful to you, you get the products and services you want, and we have happy site visitors and advertisers. Everyone wins. Ahhh, what a perfect world that would be.... *sigh* ;\

Cheers

74870 2002-08-30 01:37:00 I'd like to see ads for 3rd party apps eg. Flash tools (MOHO, Swift 3d) but I guess that's not really appropriate for here...

Maybe ads for third party tools eg antivirus, disk tools, windows tools...

74871 2002-08-30 01:54:00 sure, let me see who I can russle up.

I try to encourage advertisers to not only promote product, but to offer services on their ads (ie. like links to drivers pages, or a link through to their help-desk, or links through to demo downloads, etc), so that they're useful whether you're buying or not, so I'll see what I can do.

cheers

74873 2002-08-30 02:28:00 my thoughts exactly, tweak'e .

The basic reason for advertising is to match buyers up with sellers, or to inform . Most of the time that gets forgotten in the rush to come up with 'clever' creative .

The difference with online advertising is that it's VERY easy to tell whether it's working or not in a VERY short space of time . So you have to get it right . The KISS principle definitely comes into play here .

The campaigns that have worked the best on our sites, have been the ones that stick to the basic principles of advertising . It's not hard, you just have to be smart about your advertising . Having a goal in mind is a good start .

Cheers

74874 2002-08-30 04:55:00 I know the HP ads can cause probs re java, but I actually enjoyed these ones, especially the paper dart one. I never actually visited the HP site, but spent a good ten minutes trying to make the most aerodynamic dart :-)

Don't forget that if your hosts file gets too big (eg 1000s of entries) it can actually slow down surfing as the browser runs through all of the entries. Apart from that it is the best solution and I have been using it for about 2 years now.

74875 2002-08-30 05:01:00 I also use a hosts file, but it doesn't stop a popup from popping up ... it just stops the page from loading in the popup window.

I notice that the Google toolbar now has an "experimental" option to allow you to suppress the onUnload javascript event - not that that'll stop all popups, but still.

74876 2002-08-30 10:03:00 I'm just using a HOSTS file at the moment. Though at school I load the ads to make up for it ;) -=JM=- (16)
