75491 2002-09-01 07:37:00 I have this problem where when I try to install new software, be it games or office or what ever, the PC locks up on me.

Now I had the same problem when I had a NIC in my system, but disabling it or physically removing it fixed that problem.
I have reinstalled windows (I got a new Seagate hard drive) two weeks ago and left the NIC out because I knew what it would. So everything has been fine, no unexplained lockups during any installation, I’ve been putting the NIC in only when needed then removing it (done 3 times). Today after removing the NIC the PC hangs during installation of games and stuff, just like it would before.

Now I have no idea what to do, I thought I had found the problem but now its seems to have spread.
Please any help would be great!

75492 2002-09-01 08:21:00 could be a BIOS thing, like the interrupt (IRQ) settings or something.
In the BIOS you can look for two components being on the same IRQ.
These machines may claim to be Plug n Play, but the phrase Plug n Pray seems more appropriate to me. They certainly dont like things being put in and out at a whim.

75493 2002-09-01 08:31:00 I checked my IRQs and my sound card and graphics card were sharing IRQ 11, so i shifted the sound card over and now it has 10.
Plus i found drivers for my mother board and installed them, together (i don't know which one) this 'seems' to have solved the problem :)
I installed a game and it didn't crash!

so i'm thinking the NIC shifted the IRQs around or something, does that sound anything near being right?

So now i'm wondering if it would happen again???

75494 2002-09-01 08:39:00 if the motherboard drivers were not installed then there you go :-)
The IRQ's dont shift around as far as Im aware, problems might happen if the card has its IRQ set by a jumper or something, instead of being able to change in the BIOS. I think thats only for old stuff.
With my motherboard (intel 815) the motherboard drivers had really important things like controllers for the bus and IDE. after doing that windoze sees all sorts of stuff it didnt know was there.
If it fails again (I give it 2 years tops, for any windoze except 2000 & XP ) you need to install the motherboard drivers *first* after the windoze install, *before* you install all the other stuff.
