| 75486 | 2002-09-01 07:17:00 | Please Help, Hi, my Satellite Laptop crashed while I was playing with the Appearance settings, and will not restart. I had also just removed camera connection software from the add/remove list as it did not run, would not uninstall, and was no longer needed. It runs Win 98se. I could reinstall, but have just returned from my first trip over seas and would hate to lose 150 pic's of the beautiful Gold cost. When I turn on the laptop it boots windows but before it fully starts dos type error comes up that a file needed to run Windows or a Windows App is missing, The files are vsdata.vxd. & pwrsave.vxd. When i press a key windows contineus to load, but imeaddntly shuts down. Cheers Brendon |

| 75487 | 2002-09-01 08:45:00 | Hi Brendon, I couldnt imagine the appearance tab settings causing errors like this. I cant find any reference to this error but could be caused by a damaged registry (meaning registry hasnt got reference to the vxd files) or the vxd files themselves have been deleted or damaged. I would first try starting in Safe Mode to see if same errors occur - see pressf1.co.nz (] , then run Scanreg - see [url=]http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q273889. You could also visit the site of the laptop manufacturer to see if they have info on such errors. Otherwise it may be a Windows install. By the way, why would reinstalling the siftware delete your pictures - arent they saved as normal images? |

| 75488 | 2002-09-01 10:32:00 | My favourite trick is to reload a previous good working copy of the registry. To restore the registry: Start your computer in MS-Dos mode: hold down F8 and you will get to the boot menu - choose MS Dos You will end up at the dos prompt and should be at C:\windows. Type \sysbackup and press enter. If you are at the root C:\ prompt type CD\Windows\sysbackup and press enter. Next type scanreg /restore and press enter (there is a space between scanreg and the forward slash) You will find yourself at a menu of five registry backups named rbxxx.cab. Select a known working registry backup from the list and restart the computer. |

| 75490 | 2002-09-02 12:11:00 | Hi Brendon, some laptops have different ways of getting to the boot menu so thats why F8 probably didnt work for you. Anyways, from Windows select Start-Shutdown-Restart in MSDOS Mode From the DOS prompt you will see c:\Windows> Type in cd command & press enter Type in scanreg /restore and press enter as per Susans advice And no, reinstalling Windows wont delete your documents saved in My Documents. It only replaces files in the Windows directory and a few select others. |
