75145 2002-08-30 22:57:00 I want to format my HD and reinstall win 98 but I have a lot of graphics files and bitmaps that are large and I have no way to back them up i.e. zip drive etc. Could I create a partition from in windows, move what I want to keep to the new drive and then format C drive and then reinstall win 98 ?
Any thoughts ?
Ta.

75146 2002-08-30 23:42:00 That would work; you would need a prog like Partition Magic to do so. antmannz (28)

75148 2002-08-31 00:22:00 the catch here is even with useing partion magic is you risk loseing everything. DO NOT think partioning is safe for your data.

i would suggest borrow a spare drive or cd burner from a mate.

75150 2002-08-31 08:47:00 I just move everything I want to keep into a single directory, eg C:\BACKUP, then boot into DOS (or linux) and delete every directory except backup.

These dos commands would do it:

smartdrv /X
deltree c:\games
deltree c:\progra~1
deltree c:\windows
etc...

Using smartdrv is optional, but it makes it a lot faster.

Hmm ... good idea, just remember not to do format c:

Accidents happen. Accidents happen mostly to files which are not backed up. I've even seen an accident happen to a tape which was the only backup tape that user had. Wise people have three or more copies.

75153 2002-09-01 04:53:00 Brett has a really good point there. There is always talk of (re)formatting, when all that is required is to delete everything you dont want, most importantly the hidden and other files in the c:\root before re-installing the OS. The stuff you DO want to keep, put in a directory or directories before deleting the rest. Terry Porritt (14)
75154 2002-09-01 06:38:00 Yes, be very careful if you aren't familar with dos.
I somethines make a second copy, eg C:\ZBACKUP

And avoid using a command like:

DELTREE C:\*.*

I'm slowly learning that after hitting "Y" 50 times, chances are your going hit it again the one time you don't want to.
