1288384 2012-07-14 01:49:00 I need help to get at least the common name for the bird in the attached image. A pair of them hang around our lawn (especially when I'm feeding the sparrows).

The image ain't great, mainly because my camera's 4x optical zoom is inadequate, but you'll get the idea. It's about the size of a finch; the colour is kinda khaki/olive green on his back, and light brown underneath.

The distinguishing feature is the almost complete yellow colour around the eyes. I sorta thought it was called a yellow eye, but according to this website (www.nzbirds.com) there's no such bird.

Any ideas please?

1288393 2012-07-14 02:53:00 Hmm. After a second look at Wikipedia's page it seems that it's not what we thought. The circular colour around the bird's eyes is definitly yellow - not white nor silverish at all. Have I encountered a new sub-species? Greg (193)
