1288371 2012-07-14 00:02:00 My 15-year-old washing machine has developed a 'little' problem: It takes a long time to fill the tub - used to take about 15 mins to fill up but now it takes about an hour!

Anyone knows a lay-man's 'quick-fix'? Or, I have to call in a professional and spend hundreds?

Cheers

1288372 2012-07-14 00:09:00 I have had an old washing machine and even 15 minutes to fill it up seems like a long time. Taking an hour to fill up seems a lot worse. I have to wonder if you have a blockage somewhere.

My new, modern machine only takes a few minutes to fill up.

1288374 2012-07-14 00:34:00 It could be a couple of things .... First thing I would do is take the hoses off the taps and check that the mesh filters are clear ... failing that, it could be that the solenoid valve isn't retracting fully and is restricting the flow of water.

If you're you're into fixing things, the solenoid valves aren't that difficult to replace and you should be able to get them without too much trouble.

Just a couple of other things to check off ... have you had any other plumbing work done in the house or noticed "brown" water due to mains work in the area, and has there been any change in water pressure at other taps in the house ?

By turning off the hot an cold taps one at a time and watching the water flowing into the bowl you may be able to isolate a problem to one or the other solenoid (or inlet hoses)

1288376 2012-07-14 04:55:00 I did removed the hose but couldn't find any screen filter. Is it attached to the machine inlet as I only check the hose portion. Replacing the solenoid valve shouldn't be a difficult task for me but locating and accessing it maybe a problem. Have to google for the service manual first.

Water pressure in this house is pretty good for all taps. That shouldn't be the issue.
