1310722 2012-11-07 00:31:00 quoteth from Joe
"But every cold boot takes several attempts.
Sometimes the NTLDR is missing, other times the load stops with the B/W load bar just frozen. "

It could easily be a hard drive issue, even though it passes "Smart" . I have had faulty HD's that could pass every test you
throw at them . Drives can fail when cold , (dont we all though)

Could be any number of things, Im guessing HardDrive issues though. A bit of a tough one if you dont have spare parts
to swap out for testing/diag

1310723 2012-11-07 00:51:00 On my Nexus right now - the SOYO is, er --- BUSY testing it's RAM.

I have a couple of slightly used hdds that I can substitute. One even has Win 98SE in it that was on this same puter, so it should fire right up.

GAWD! I bet it needs a week's worth of updates by now too.

Hehehehe --- I also found a 5400 RPM hdd with W-ME on it! Talk about 'dated' huh? That was the most supreme piece of junk ever foisted on computers by M$. Just a big joke --- kinda like Linux. (don't tell Chill I said that - OK?)

1310725 2012-11-07 01:52:00 As long as I don't have to be the guy who installs it it's fine w/me.

TeaTimer is not running in the SOYO.

1310726 2012-11-07 03:49:00 You could just plug the 98se drive in and boot from it a few times from cold. If it doesn't display the same issue it would indicate it's probably the other drive. No real need to actually update or use 98 for anything other than boot testing.

If it seems like it is the drive you will need to consider whether to bite the bullet and reinstall from scratch on another hard drive or attempt to clone the current setup onto another drive.

Also are you leaving anything plugged into a USB port or any disks in the optical drive or anything like that? some machines do weird things and look for boot files in the wrong place when they see other potential boot devices attached. Usually setting the main hard drive as the first or only boot device fixes this, but not always.

A couple weeks back I spent 20 mins trying to fix a friends PC that froze when rebooting while I was sitting there, turns out it was the smartphone left plugged in to charge that was preventing it from booting. I felt a bit foolish when I figured that out - Step 1. for boot issues, remove all unecessary peripherals, disks, etc and try again.

1310727 2012-11-07 04:11:00 I tried stripping all the peripheral devices and it seems to make no difference.

One peculiarity I still have is Chrome loads up even if I'm not using it at boot, and I go into Task Manager and kill the process and nothing seems to suffer at all - so I think it's a call by Firefox to get it running - I dunnow.

If I actually bring in the real Chrome browser, I get about 6-7 copies of it running in the Task Manager and I think that's odd.

At the same time, the mouse can freeze and then I have to wait for it to un-freeze which usually takes a few seconds at most.

There are no SD cards nor any other media in any of the USB ports or any of the ported devices (printer, powered USB) and the floppy is disconnected the Molex, as I don't use it at all - so when I thought I was having low power problems from the PSU, I took it outta the chain and just never put it back.

Funny thing is that this unit has been running quite impressively for years with pretty much this same setup and not much has changed but my ISP and that was a year ago. I cannot fathom anything that's causing this grief.

OH - I DO have an archiving SATA hd that is in an enclosure, but I only turn it on when I want to save something -- like to protect myself from drive-by Linux installations. It isn't on much at all and has never given me any grief.

Chrome is Chrome and Firefox is Firefox so Chrome loading at boot has nothing to do with FF but Google usually have a couple of things loading on startup.

We've all been caught out with something like that but you wish you could kick yourself at the time.

1310730 2012-11-08 20:56:00 OK - report time .

The RAM test proved nothing at all .

So I got to dinking with the system and decided to dump Chrome all together . I got tired of seeing it load up at least one instance of itself via my Task Manager even when I wasn't using Chrome .

If I turned Chrome on - I'd get a dozen or so versions of it running and turing it off they'd stay there in the T/M with the exception of the one that I'd kill on the web - or so I thought .

Taking Chrome completely out of the system - SO FAR has completely solved my instability and problems holding a web page . FWIW: I also took Firefox out and reinstalled it to get a clean version in case the one I had was messed up somehow .

Before I took Chrome out, I'd wind up back at a naked desktop and lose my WMP and any browser I'd have open .

Everything would crash and both FF and M$ would ask me to send crash reports . I got tired of that and as nothing changed anyway - I took this last drastic measure upon myself .

What amazed me was that WMP10 would crash too . Go figger! .

To be honest, I had taken the URLs for some of Loadcaster Streaming Systems and just inserted them into my WMP10 player and would access them from there . I couldn't trust FF or Chrome to hold the page and it would crash whenever it felt like it .

Now - a couple of hours after taking Chrome out - no more crashes .

Next? I'll try a cold boot in the AM, but I'm gonna let things run here since things are so-o-o good right now!

Hey - my FF built-in spell-checker is working again - and CORRECTLY too!!!!! This is very good!

Nice what a clean installation can do . But stay tuned - there may be much more to this story .
