Buying the Telstra infrustructure instead of using telecoms (where possible) will help be more competitive (not saying it will be any better). If they start frigging around with my cable access there will be trouble though lol What infrastructure in the home market has TC got except in Wellington and Christchurch which the bought from Saturn?? |

| 1287984 | 2012-07-12 22:48:00 | I think Saturn was just the cable TV (and maybe cable broadband) that Telstra bought out wasnt it? Then it bought out Clear which had some infrastructure. A couple of statemnts from this article (tvnz.co.nz). Vodafone will get TelstraClear's voice and data based services, network infrastructure and New Zealand customer base of around 200,000. "This rounds out their whole business in New Zealand, and puts them on more of an equal footing with Telecom," said the analyst. While Vodafone has a lot of data services, TelstraClear has the infrastructure. At a guess I would think Vodafone now has around 30% of the market and Telecom is around 49% last stats I saw, hardly an "equal footing". A bit surprised TC only has about 200,000 customers, thats not alot really. I wonder what direction 2degrees will go and if it is at risk from either being bought out or stamped out next. |

| 1287985 | 2012-07-13 01:53:00 | Saturn had both TV and fone service in Wellington and Christchurch. Clear Com had the fiber back bone. When Telstra bought first Saturn then Clear the got both cable , Homeline, fiber backbone and toll switching network | paulw (1826) | ||
| 1287986 | 2012-07-13 02:05:00 | So we are back to a duopoly. So mobile phone and broadband prices will stay just about the highest in the world. How does the logic on that comment run? Mobile phone providers: Telecom Vodafone 2Degrees Skinny (offshoot of Telecom, but aiming for different market segment) That's more than two - and there are probably others... Broadband: Telecom Vodafone Orcon Slingshot Xnet Maxnet Woosh Snap That's also more than two, and there are lots of other small players too... |

| 1287987 | 2012-07-13 02:07:00 | Maybe he means duopoly with the backbone? ADSL vs Cable. For fixed lines. For the common consumer. There may be other ways for larger customers. Well thinking about it .. Voda is ADSL right ... so isn't that the same sorta. Re: cellular. If it wasn't b/c of 2D maybe Vodafone would still be on their 89c per minute option for prepay. |

| 1287988 | 2012-07-13 02:47:00 | Well, for the duopoly for the mobiles, you have vodafone and telescum. 2degrees runs of Vodafone's lines, and skinny runs of telescum's. |

Well thinking about it .. Voda is ADSL right ... so isn't that the same sorta. No, its no different than it was previously. Before: Telstraclear had Cable, but also offered ADSL through both their own unbundled equipment as well as an agreement with Telecom Wholesale to use their equipment where their own isn't available Now: Telstraclear has Cable, but also offers ADSL through both their own unbundled equipment as well as an agreement with Telecom Wholesale to use their equipment where their own isn't available Still no change. |

| 1287990 | 2012-07-13 03:06:00 | Well, for the duopoly for the mobiles, you have vodafone and telescum. 2degrees runs of Vodafone's lines, and skinny runs of telescum's. 2D have their own network which is expanding all the time, they have coverage now in areas Vodafone don't, and where 2D don't have coverage yes they do use Voafones but only until their own is finished, so not really a duopoly |

| 1287991 | 2012-07-13 03:37:00 | Yes, sorry I was not 100% correct there. I agree that with mobile there are 3 networks, as Gary says 2deggrees have their own in most areas. But the Commerce Commission set the Termination Rates which governs what 2Degrees can charge for connecting to other networks (unless they want to make a loss) As regards Broadband, its getting far too complicated for me to keep up with. How many undersea cables are there ? (one) How many fibre networks are there ? How many wireless networks are there ? And the governments ufb network confuses me as well. |
