| 1311772 | 2012-11-10 23:26:00 | 3.5 hours to transfer an image over my network which has a Gigabit router to my WD MyBook Live Hard Drive and 17 minutes to a USB 3 Hard Drive. Do they make Network Hard Drives with a USB 3 so I can just walk over large amounts of data with my WD Passport Hard Drive? | lostsoul62 (16011) | ||
| 1311773 | 2012-11-11 07:51:00 | USB3 has a significantly higher (approx 5 times) maximum throughput than gigabit LAN, so it isn't surprising that copying over USB3 is faster than LAN, though that is a far more significant difference than I would have expected. | 1311776 | 2012-11-13 14:40:00 | Given the 17 minute transfer time for USB3, I'll assume we're talking an image on the order of ~100GB, which would take ~3 hours on a typical 100mbps LAN, but should be not too dissimilar from the USB3 time (~20min) over a full gigabit LAN. Either your drive(s) are not performing well, or your LAN is not running at gigabit speeds. | inphinity (7274) | ||

Otherwise I agree, gigabit ethernet is faster than most mechanical hdds sustained read/write speeds. You have a gigabit router, but is everything else in the chain gigabit? |
