2012-07-11 22:12:00 | . stuff . co . nz/dominion-post/news/7263942/Smartphones-to-get-police-on-the-beat" target="_blank">www . stuff . co . nz Smartphones worth more than $5 million could be rolled out to frontline police throughout New Zealand in an effort to get more staff out of the office and on to the street to prevent crime . Inspector Simon Feltham said this week that 5000 of the latest Blackberrys or iPhones could be made available to staff by June 30 next year . Additional iPads or HP Elitebooks, a laptop which doubles as a tablet, could also be made available to some staff . The retail value of 5000 of the latest iPhones is more than $5m . However, police hope to secure a cheaper deal with cellphone providers . Someone needs to sack the adviser who recommended blackberrys because its looking pretty dead to me . No comment about the iphones, but it wouldnt be my choice . At least they will be able to use the GPS to find the nearest donut shop .

2012-07-12 01:03:00 | RIM is so far behind now - Delayed launch of Blackberry OS 10 next year; It's way too late now. iPhone or Android is the way to go now. | sahilcc7 (15483) | |
2012-07-12 01:09:00 | Aren't RIM talking about ditching their own OS in favour of Android now? | wratterus (105) | |
2012-07-12 01:15:00 | You've got to consider the migration cost for enterprises already heavily invested in BlackBerry, as well as the lack of centralised management available for iOS and most Android devices still. | inphinity (7274) | |
2012-07-12 02:00:00 | Very misleading to call a Blackberry or an iPhone a "smartphone"! :D | johcar (6283) | |
2012-07-12 09:29:00 | But will having a smart phone make them any smarter. | mikebartnz (21) | |
2012-07-12 09:39:00 | These are work devices though. They don't need fancy apps or anything like that; chances are, what they'll be running will be a simple mobile webapp that would work on any smartphone browser. Plus - something like a Blackberry is less prone to misuse...
