| 75883 | 2002-09-02 09:49:00 | just curious about this, old cd writer stops writing ,then stops reading goes for repair comes back with death certificate but find out that it still reads perfectly in dos (win98dos) using generic driver from bootdisk And have used it to mirror cds to hardisk (remember xcopy?) and install programs from there. Just all seems a bit odd, .................. |

| 75885 | 2002-09-06 04:10:00 | This is quite possible. The laser has to run at higher power to write than to read. When the laser ages, it will need more current to get the original output power. There is a current limiting circuit, because laser diodes can get thermal runaway and internally smoke very quickly. :-( The repair shop probably wound up the current control to get more output. If is still didn't give enough output to write a CD, it is "dead" as a writer. But that would probably give enough output in the low power mode to read. ;-) Just don't expect it to last for ever. |

| 75887 | 2002-09-06 10:55:00 | well windows does get in the way sometimes. I sometimes find that a CD won't work in windows. Then go into DOS and can grab the files and run from windows then. |
