75705 2002-09-02 06:56:00 Ok Brains, here's the thing. I am wanting to set up a thing whereby everytime the computer is booted up in the morning it will display a message. I don't really mind how the message is displayed, as long as it is obvious. The tricky part is that I want to display a different message everyday for about a month.

If anybody knows of way this can be achieved they would obviously have a brain the size of a small planet, and I would count myself lucky to have had the honour of their assistance.

I am running crusty old Win Me.

75706 2002-09-02 07:02:00 You have already got something to do that.

It's called TOTD - tip of the day. It comes free with windows.

What you need is something like X-Setup, or you can hack the reg by yourself if you're game. Then you can edit the tips to say whatever message you like.

And no, my brain isn't that big...

75707 2002-09-02 07:03:00 Change to Linux and make a file called /etc/motd with your message. :D

If you want to stick to MS, isn't there a scheduling utility ...which can run a batch file to @echo off
cls
echo My message for today

75709 2002-09-02 12:23:00 Naughty PJ. I sometimes get a different message every day when I boot up. Some say "Fatal Exception @ xxx" others say "A general protection fault". A lovely blue colour too. Im sure I could get a different message everyday for a month :-)

I believe there are programs that do this too ... ready to spread their gospel to you everyday for the rest of your life. Try a search on Download.com and Im sure there will be a few to choose from.

Your startupfolder could be used as well to run a windows script or batch file that reads from a text file etc. Will take some minor programming but can be done.

cheers

75710 2002-09-02 12:30:00 This probably won't help you, but I've set this up at my office. The marketing department wanting something that would appear first thing in the morning, but only if the message had changed.

I developed a small application in Visual Basic that runs in the startup script (or in the Startup folder if you like). Its basically an Internet Explorer window that displays an html page. When the program starts it checks the date of the html file with a date that is written to the registry containing the date of the file the last time it was read. If the dates are the same it doesn't display - if they are different it does.

Its a little annoying though, because you have to read it before you can make it go away. Happy to get the code if you need it.
