| 75711 | 2002-09-02 06:47:00 | i have started to give linux ago but i think my distro (redhat7.3) dosn't like sub 36meg machines. can't seem to get Xconfigurator to run after install and startx dosn't work. what is a good MINIMAL distro for underpowered pc's? just looking for a basic replacement for win95 on a p75 o/c to 120mhz with 26meg edo ram. |

I've got one with 40 MB disk on a 20MHz 386Sx with 6 MB of ram, but that was Slackware 2 . 0 in 1996 . There are a few minimal ones, but they are pretty limited . There is one which fits in a 10 MB DOS directory (it was distributed as browser for a Portuguese ISP) . If you've got a 330-500 MB disk, RH5 . 2 or 6 . 2 would certainly fit . It's only about version 7 that they want huge disk space . startx won't work if you haven't managed to configure X-Window . You should have the "getting started" guide on the disk . Also read the Hardware-HOWTO, which lists what hardware works and doesn't . |

| 75713 | 2002-09-02 07:11:00 | what???!!! no overclocking with linux :_|:_|:_|:_| sorry pc has 1.6gig drive so 7.3 fits ok (1.3 gig install......argghhhhh) tho i hope to trim a lot of that out when i get the thing to work. will check the guide however i just saw minimal specs Hard Disk Space*: Minimum: 650MB Recommended: 2.5GB Full Installation: 4.5GB *Additional space will be required for file storage. Memory: Minimum for text-mode: 32MB Minimum for graphical: 64MB Recommended for graphical: 96MB kinda blows my pc out of the water. |

| 75714 | 2002-09-02 07:17:00 | Yes, the expectations of the later versions are a bit much . My fastest is a P133, and I have only recently bumped its memory to 96M . It worked OK at 32 MB . That has RH7 . 2 . But I use Gnome only when I need to (for GIMP and my scanner) . A lot of the stuff is not needed . (Though they tend to install some stuff even when told not to) . There are also less resource-heavy GUIs thatn Gnome and KDE . |

I think you will find an older distro, eg redhat 5/6, more useful and quite a bit smaller. You should still be able to have a usable desktop, although it won't be as friendly as the newer ones. I was able to run KDE1 on a 16mb 486-100 running dragon linux on a dos partition. |

Also we're having to learn a bit of it for OS100 so it's nice to have it at home to use as well. Plus everybody should learn to be proficient in linux. Mike's reason. PressF1 is hosted on a linux server. So you know why he's learning linux. |

LOLOLOLOLOLOL well done JM :) actually my reason's because I had an empty 20gb drive in my system that just wasn't being used, and I didn't want it to die just by gathering dust, so I'm making use of it. Besides, it gives me something new to play with (so that I stop destroying PressF1 :D) Mike. |
