| 75608 | 2002-09-01 23:32:00 | I've downloaded the free version 6.0 AVG virus protection software and have it operating at present on my computer. Has anyone else out there been using it and if so, how effective or useful is it?. How come you can get this type of software free? I always suspect that there is an almighty catch somewhere. |

| 75609 | 2002-09-02 00:03:00 | it should be ok. I use norton, and keep it updated, but quite honestly over the last year I haven't actually needed it for anything. Always best to be safe though. AVG should be fine. Anything is better than nothing, and as long as you keep it updated you'll be sweet as. There isn't a catch. It would be a bit hard to tell you exactly WHY you can get software like that for free. I guess what it comes down to is that sometimes there are programmers who decide that they want to program for "the greater good" rather than making a quick buck. These programmers don't work for microsoft :D I think it's great. You should be able to get software like that free... Ideally you shouldn't have to worry about it but I guess free protection is the next best thing... |

I have friends who run both Norton and McAfee and I find that AVG is every bit as good as either for virus protection. As for how they can make it free my guess is either as a service to home users, or in the hopes that after using it for some time you will as I do recommend their product to corporate users. Either way I am thankful. :) |

I checked AVG out here and then took it on and touch wood been going fine for about 3-4 months now. If you want to read up people's opinions on it put this "Norton expires 2moro" in the search box and you'll learn heaps. Have fun! Happy AVG user. :) :) :) :) :) |

| 75615 | 2002-09-02 07:04:00 | you will have noticed that the free version is missing the advanced optoins that the pro (paid) ver has. personally i find its a little quick to label a file a virus. a tad touchy and the updates are big compared to nortons (2002). however a free upto date antvirus is far better than a paid out of date one. |

AVG sits in the background and does the job, without appreciable slowing down of the machines.... much better Because we are paranoid, i have nortons on one machine, and it checks the "shared space" also, but AVG does the ongoing stuff, perfectly |
