75538 2002-09-03 04:31:00 The next command to learn is tail -20 /var/log/messages .

This will tell you what is happening, when you can't use your modem, or other things go wrong.

The modem is busy because, as always happens when you are getting dialup (PPPD)working, you crash out, leaving the lock file. As long as there's a lock file, you can't get the device again. The same might happen with the printer. Have a look in the /var/locks/ tree. You can delete lockfiles if they are not needed (and it doesn't do much damage even if they are needed :D --- you are a single user; locks are needed when you have multiple users).

I think there is a local mirror of Linux (part of the tucows on a local ISP). That might have Mandrake. There are also people selling CDs (copyleft, and the guy at Lincoln) or in trademe auctions.

75539 2002-09-04 12:34:00 I had a lot of your problems with Mandrake 8.2, nothing seeemd to work, & would lock up when using the drives & kept on installing the Win Modem instead of the standard one, & then saying it didn't support them!!!!! I just about gave up. Everything is now working :-)
1. Reboot and go in to the Bios setup.
2. Deselect the DMA on all the drives.
3. Save Bios settings & reboot.

If you are also running Windows, the DMA can be turned on by Windows, so the Bios settings can be off.
