76062 2002-09-03 08:36:00 If you wanted to try Linux, but were afraid to ruin your present setup, or were intimidated by the problems some have installing, have a look here:

www.idg.net.nz

Thanks Juha

I have this running on my old P266 and its great. you can play around with it as much as you like, close down without saving your settings and next time it comes back a good as new. Running off the CD and memory is a brilliant idea for Linux newbies (like me).

Hope this works. Both were cut & Paste, but I may have been sloppy.

If it dosen't just put Knoppix in the website search engine

Go with part 2

76066 2002-09-03 10:24:00 It likes to break up long words by inserting a space so it doesn't push everything off the side of the screen.

But you can insert a link (idg.net.nz)

Have a look at: Formatting options (pressf1.co.nz).

76067 2002-09-04 00:56:00 Chaps....we're putting a bootable version of Knoppix on our October CD. Only 26 more sleeps if you can hang out that long.

:)

76068 2002-09-04 02:27:00 You mean I could have saved a 42hour download over the weekend!!
Well I was away most of it.

76069 2002-09-04 02:31:00 Remember that any Linux which does not use a native disk structure (that is, really installed) will be slower at all disk operations. Especially if it is running from the CD.

You will get the taste, but the performance might be disppointing.

76070 2002-09-04 02:34:00 You're right, running off the CD is alot slower than a hard drive - but for people wanting a taste of Linux without all the fuss, this is perfect. Scott Bartley (836)
76071 2002-09-04 02:46:00 I wasn't knocking it: I've still got one like this from about 1996 -- Linux-FT, I think, which was quite usable on a 386SX-20.B-) But some people might be tempted to complain about the speed.:-( You must have met such people ;-) Graham L (2)
