76072 2002-09-04 03:02:00 Couldn't agree more Scott.
I'm interested in playing with Linux to get my head around it( a little anyrate) Then I can lookup the net for the stuff I need to know, and have some slight idea of how it all fits together before going the Whole Hog

But at the same time I don't want to parallel install a new OS on my present computer setup and have it stuff up the existing OS because I didn't know what I was doing(playing).

Knoppix fits my bill to a T

76073 2002-09-04 03:48:00 Anyone who can't wait and doesn't want a 42 hour download can buy the CD from either Copyleft (for $15) (www.copyleft.co.nz/) or xsolutions (for $12) (http:).

Both give fast service.

76075 2002-09-04 04:07:00 Use google with "knoppix" and you'll find lots of information. Graham L (2)
76076 2002-09-04 07:20:00 Is it true Linux as in boots in to the CLI or is it just a flashy Lets make more people like linux where it boots into a GUI. -=JM=- (16)
76077 2002-09-04 07:25:00 Am I missing something?
I used to grep and vi with SCO Sys V ten years ago and I don't miss it.
What does one do that is useful with a linux box other than play around in the command prompt?
robo.

76078 2002-09-05 05:18:00 Have a look at GIMP . Photoshop equivalent and a bit cheaper (about $1500 cheaper) . Have a look at some of the Office packages . MS equivalent and a bit cheaper (how much is MS Office Pro?) . And the OS itself is a lot cheaper than that other OS . Makes a difference for me .

Air New Zealand seem to think that Linux has some advantages --- and they're working with IBM on it; IBM are treating it seriously, too . (Of course they've got to save some money --- look at what they've paid out to the redundant managers) .

What's a BSOD, robo?

What OS is hosting this forum?

I play with networks . I like networking that works, because it conforms to the standards . I don't use vi (or not much . . . but it's on every installation so I can use it to fix things if necessary) .

76079 2002-09-05 05:43:00 I'm learning how to use vi at the moment. It seems rather confusing so far, but I'll get used to it. -=JM=- (16)
76080 2002-09-05 06:07:00 Yes, it's handy to know the minimum set for vi, but there are nicer editors . By that, I don't mean Emacs . It's a bit like TECO . I use joe (because it's like the WordPro based editor in Turbo Pascal) . Pico is quite nice for simple things too, and the internal editor in mc is quite useful too . On that subject --- install mc ("midnight Commander", because it is the most useful programme you can have . It does everything .

I don't know about the graphic editors in Gnome and KDE, but I'm sure they are better for "Windows" folk .
