76146 2002-09-03 11:15:00 Anyway to make text go up the side of the page rather than the usual left to right?
I felt like doing something different, but cant think of any way of doing it apart from using a .gif on the edge of the page.

<STYLE>
.clsHoriz { writing-mode:lr-tb }
</STYLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>

<H1>writing-mode Attribute</H1>

This example shows how to use the writing-mode attribute to
display horizontal text (<SPAN >lr-tb</SPAN>) within vertical text
(<SPAN>tb-rl</SPAN>).</P>

The following DIV element has a writing-mode of tb-rl
and contains text and SPAN child elements. The text flow alternates
between vertical and horizontal. Note the effect of the BR element
after the second set of vertical text.</P>
Hi Chris,

Not sure if this work with other Browsers, but works for ie.

<DIV STYLE="writing-mode:tb-rl">
First Set of Vertical Text
<SPAN CLASS="clsHoriz">First Set of Horizontal Text</SPAN>
Second Set of Vertical Text plus a line break

<SPAN STYLE="writing-mode:lr-tb">Second Set of Horizontal Text</SPAN>
Third Set of Vertical Text
<SPAN CLASS="clsHoriz">Third Set of Horizontal Text</SPAN>
</DIV>
</BODY>
</HTML>

76149 2002-09-04 03:48:00 Ok, thats nice, but...

Can you write stuff from the bottom to the top of the page on the left hand side of the screen??

Cheers,
Craig.

(I tried a variety of combinations of tb and rl but to no avail...)

76150 2002-09-04 06:32:00 I think you'll be hard pushed to find a way to do it with code.

The writing-mode css property is supposed to be used to display asian-type character sets where you start at the top right of the page and read downward; it has only 2 properties:

lr-tb: designed for Western-type character sets
tb-rl: designed for Eastern-type character sets

If you do find a way to do it, I'd like to see it. :)

76151 2002-09-04 06:54:00 one question, seeing parts of the code turned into ;) or ;-)
were they *;*)* or *;*-*)* (less the stars of course)?

76152 2002-09-04 07:02:00 Huh ?:|

I meant seeing the code to put text up the side of an html page, reading from bottom to top

76153 2002-09-05 10:55:00 Cheers, I think i'll have to stick to making text in photoshop then,

Craig.

76154 2002-09-08 09:42:00 I finaly got around to trying the vertical text thing... twas a good trick, but cross browser compatability on the code below was quite frankly non exsistant It works with IE, so i shall play with it so it looks ok either way

<DIV STYLE="writing-mode:tb-rl">
First Set of Vertical Text
<SPAN CLASS="clsHoriz">First Set of Horizontal Text</SPAN>
Second Set of Vertical Text plus a line break

<SPAN STYLE="writing-mode:lr-tb">Second Set of Horizontal Text</SPAN>
Third Set of Vertical Text
<SPAN CLASS="clsHoriz">Third Set of Horizontal Text</SPAN>
</DIV>

Thanks and sorry i been such a slack ***********
Chris.
