76443 2002-09-04 18:49:00 I have an athlon xp 1800 running windows 2000 pro. My little brother installed xp pro on and did not upgrade it. Now I have a choice of two operating systems at startup. (2000 and xp). Xp is activated but I have found it to be slow and sluggish and jerky, but windows 2000 is running as usual. How can I get rid of 2000 so that I am using xp. Do I have to format the whole drive? Both operating systems are on the same partition (I think). bunnyrslow (1759)
76444 2002-09-04 21:30:00 If Win XP is slow sluggish and jerky, and Win 2000 running as normal, why are you wanting to get rid of 2000 in favour of XP?

76446 2002-09-05 10:48:00 I stand to be corrected but I don't think you can install XP and 2000 on the same partition, so it won't be too hard...see what more learned folk say. godfather (25)

76449 2002-09-06 03:38:00 Oh dear... that's the worst possible excuse someone could have for upgrading... :O

"If it ain't broke, why fix it?" ... I am cringing with the expectation of complaints from you about your system's performance should you remove Win2k for XP Pro...

Oh well... your system, not mine... hope it works out. :|

I installed Windows 2000 [ntsf] and XP pro [fat32] on the same partition. My brother liked the look of XP pro where as I liked the feel of Windows 2000 so I installed both. I'd also like to add ... never again. Windows 2000 as the sole O/S .. awesome. But when I installed XP pro, programs that worked fine in w2k previously had now become unstable. I got so fed up I re-imaged my hard drive. Now I'm back to w2k ... and I'm a happier camper for it :)

impossible - you cannot have NTFS and FAT32 on the same partition! these are two completely different file systems, and the whole partition would have needed to have been one file system. If you managed to do it, then there's no wonder you had problems - the problems are nothing to do with the OS, there because of how it's installed. It needs its own partition, especially if you're wanting different file systems.

Firstly, I don't appreciate when someone, especially a stranger implies I'm lying. Secondly, why would I. I had done it once and because of the promblems I had that was the only time. As for "no wonder you had problems" ... you're rather stating the obvious don't you think and merely repeating what I just said! Thirdly, I'm well aware that separate partitions were required. But since it allowed me to do it anyway I thought what the hell lets see where it takes me - which is why I mentioned it in the friggin first place! Finally it must have been on the same partition because I hadn't divided my drive up before or during setup. So you tell me, if not the same partition then what?
