76196 2002-09-03 16:27:00 I have been setting up a home network using Win98SE Internet Connection Sharing, with three other computers on the network all running Win95B/C - using TCP/IP. Network works fine - no problem for the client computers to get on the internet, data and printing sharing all work fine. The issue is with using MSN Messenger on the client computers...

MSN Messenger works fine on the ICS server - how do I get it to work on the client computers?!! Basically, if you run MSN Messenger, it fails to log in and then crashes.
I understand that this is something to do with port settings and that the client computers cannot 'listen' on the port to receive from MSN as they are not directly connected to the ISP, it being an issue to do with Network Address Translation.... but what to do about it, I am not sure!

I have been to the site www.practicallynetworked.com but found their explanations of what is involved and what needs to be done a little poor. Any help about what I have to do on the ICS server to enable the client computers to be able to use MSN Messenger would be gratefully received!

76197 2002-09-04 00:13:00 When i had a network i had endless problems with microsofts ICS, i don't even think it is supported by them.
I downloaded Wingate (http://www.wingate.com) it use to be a NZ company i think but now deerfield has taken over it. Anyway this prog should sort out all your problems.
If you don't want to use that, try making each of the IP address static, with the server as a subnet of 255.255.255.0
and then give that a try, don't use DHCP or anything like that, just all static, then MSN hopefully won't get lost on it's way to the net,

76198 2002-09-04 02:39:00 Sometimes you have to change the IP on the slave, If static doesn't work, try getting it to auto assign, and don't forget the IE6 has always helped me!!! Chilling_Silence (9)
