76173 2002-09-03 15:24:00 Hi..

Recently added more Ram to fill up the only 2 visibly obvious Dimm slots on a 531CF Motherboard based on Pentium PC/AT. But when I run diagnostic programs to scan hardware and software (e.g. Blearc Advisor,PCPitstop) settings, they all report that 3 Dimms are present, even though the manual says 2, and I saw only 2. Does this mean that a 3rd slot can be added?...

76174 2002-09-03 20:53:00 Pretty obvious from looking at the mobo, no room to add a slot. Faulty description I would say...... godfather (25)
76175 2002-09-03 23:24:00 3 dimms or 3 banks?

could well be its seeing the memory banks. ie you have double sided ram in one slot and a single sided in anouther giveing 3 banks.

76176 2002-09-03 23:54:00 Its strange tweak'e, the specs here (www.jetway.com.tw) show it as having 3 banks, the picture only 2. godfather (25)
76177 2002-09-04 01:21:00 Tweak'e is probably right, banks and number of slots is not the same.
On my KT7A (which has a socket A, BTW, thanks for the correction tweake, I had a bad day yesterday), there are 3 DIMM slots, each of which has 2 banks, corresponding I think to single density or double density memory modules.

76178 2002-09-04 08:32:00 "Support 3 X 168-pins DIMM Module Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM)"

From the mobo description on the web above...but clearly visible is 2 sockets only...

But I take the good point about banks and sockets being different.

76179 2002-09-04 09:27:00 CHIPSET supports 3 dimms but mobo maker only put 2 on.

>"Support 3 X 168-pins DIMM Module Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM)"

sounds like bullshit sales once again.

76180 2002-09-04 09:36:00 Thanks you lot...and for the specs...

Got me understanding more...Must be due to the banks vs the slots scenario... When I 1st upgraded adding 128 (PC 133) to the original 64 (PC 100), the PC recognized this correctly as 192.
But on 2nd upgrade, added 256 (PC 133) to replace the 64 but PC only recognized as 256 (PC 133) rather than 384. After panicking, took PC to local store (where I purchased the RAM's) where the techie was puzzled, but eventually fixed it by replacing the RAM's (or RAM) with the correct type(s) and the techie did mention that double sided RAM had to be used when going beyond 256MB for this MBoard (also said that this RAM is getting hard to source). Though the manual said nothing about using specific RAM modules, for the higher upgrades..
