76759 2002-09-05 18:40:00 Okay I have a game which is a DOS offering. It is designed to work in Windows 98 and I would ideally like it to run without having to have the Cd continually in the drive. However, after repeatedly copying all the files onto my Hard Drive, I still have the software asking for the Cd to be put in before it will run the game. There has to be a way around this, so that I can run this game from my Hard drive, but can I fathom it out? Please can someone younger than me give me a clue as to how I can do this? Many thanks. cypher000 (1782)
76760 2002-09-05 20:47:00 Hi. An easy way around this is to use a CD emulator - a program that makes the pc think a portion of it's hard drive is a virtual CD drive. Plenty of such apps around, including one called CD Emulator - try download.com and you should find several free apps. Greg S (201)
76761 2002-09-05 22:52:00 Heh, this goes back a bit.

-Copy the cd to a folder on your hard drive
-in DOS, or your autoexec.bat type "subst y: x:/gamefolder" (fill in the blanks - x: will be your fake cd drive
-check it's working by typing "subst"
-Once done, you can then run the setup from the fake CD drive into a real directory.

76762 2002-09-05 23:02:00 FIrst I am guessing that you own the CD and just don't want to use it.

firstly go into the game folder and look at the files in word pad and see if you can change where to look for the cd.

Alternatively and ONLY if you own the cd. you could try using a cdremove crack. you may be able to find one at megagames.

If you don't own the cd buy it

76763 2002-09-05 23:04:00 Interesting havent heard of that one Sonikalien. Must try that one day to see what happens :-)

Theres lots of different emulators like fakecd etc which will emulate the game and download.com is a good place to start. A search through Google with words such as "CD emulator" or "No CD" will bring up a few results that may assist you as well.

76764 2002-09-06 00:00:00 unfortuntly sonikalien way won't work with all cd's. some require a cd image to run off while copy protected disks may not work at all. tweak'e (174)
76765 2002-09-06 00:10:00 Try somewhere like GameCopyWorld (www.gamecopyworld.dk).

By and large most of the information in this site requires the original cd installation before applying whatever instructions are required.

76766 2002-09-06 01:19:00 Yeah I agree with Antzman... actually, do a google for whatever your game is + no cd patch ... and see what it comes up with...

Otherwise, go to gamecopyworld.com and search their database... they are generally pretty good with that sort of thing!

If by chance it does work then you'll want to know how to delete the mapped drive you've created:

subst y: /d

76768 2002-09-07 07:40:00 Hi you guys! Many thanks for the wonderful replies that flooded in about my problem getting the DOS game Mad Dog McCree to run on my Hard Drive. I thought it best to answer you all in this one attempt because, boy, am I tired (I have Cancer) after chasing through the Internet trying to find the references you all so caringly gave me. For 'NathanTheKind' Yes, I do own the software. I hate Software Pirates as much as you must do. For 'Helvista', sorry, I am unable to play around with Autoexec.bats and the like. For 'Lohsing', No response for "Mad Dog McCree. no CD patch". For 'Parry', I did actually find "FakeCD" but the doc files were corrupted and would not open. I whacked myself out downloading them many times. Reviewers repeatedly said it was a duff item, but I was unable to verify this as it would not open for me. Sad eh? 'For Greg S', I tried and tried, but there are no 'Free CD Emulators' on the web. In fact, the only decent CD Emulator I came up with, was the 'Virtual Cd V4' which was just what I needed, going by the ads. But at almost $40 it is way out of reach of me on my State Pension. Okay, so I have to hand it to you guys, you really do care and I am amazed at the quality and amount of help you have all tried to give me. Seems though, like you have to have dissapointments some time and maybe this one is mine. cypher000 (1782)
