76583 2002-09-05 03:29:00 Hi, have a vertical line on screen whenever playing dvd/svcd/mpeg media. I use WMP and Powerdvd. The line runs from top to bottom and is about half a cm wide. I have an AMD 800mhz, s3 savage video card, 128 ram, running xp pro. Any solutions?

Cheers

76584 2002-09-05 05:29:00 Is this on a range of different players? Or is it just on one player...if so what is the player? You could try checking your hardware acceleration ........yeah! Timmy (1727)
76585 2002-09-05 09:54:00 The only players I have are Powerdvd 4 (came with combo drive) and WMP. Both produce the vertical line. How do I heck hardware acceleration? Tried Win DVD but this just froze on me.
Thanks

OK. So all you see is a (white?) strip 5mm wide from top to bottom and the screen is black?

Or there is a black line 5mm wide on a normal looking display?

Or is there (please insert a description here...?)

If you could elaborate, we cant help if we don't know, as we cannot see your screen. Some people visiting this forum are quite skilled at deducing the likely cause if you could explain it.

76587 2002-09-05 10:49:00 The picture is a normal display except for the vertical line (5-6mm thick). The line description is striped and alternates from top to bottom with a dark segment followed by the actual colour of the video scene playing. This pattern continues thru the entire strip. The line is more prominent on 'lighter coloured scenes'. On closer inspection it looks like 4 x thin vertical strips resembling 'a DNA coding band (striped)'. Hope this helps? Gully (1768)

Can't help you with the vertical line problem, sorry. But as for enabling hardware acceleration.

For PowerDVD: (when no dvd is playing)

1. right click the window
2. goto "configuration"
3. goto "video" tab

At the top you should see "Hardware Acceleration" and "enable" next to a check box. Check that box. You have now enabled hardware acceleration.

76589 2002-09-07 09:16:00 Thanks for the info, you're right, I still have the line problem? Gully (1768)
76590 2002-09-07 11:12:00 Thanks for the good description.

It sounds like the card is delivering the incorrect info, more than the monitor showing a problem. You may want to load the latest drivers for the card. What model of S3 card is it?

Its not "on-board" video by any chance (as in integrated with the motherboard, and sharing system RAM)?

That its linear (as in same place on the screen all the way down) it suggests a driver problem most likely.
