76738 2002-09-06 10:09:00 Yes, the dial-up modem was re-detected but I cancelled the re-install.
I agree that ethernet to a router is a better interface but the laptop has no built in ethernet port and I didn't want to use the PCMCIA slot. Though, thinking about it, if anyone knows of a PCMCIA ADSL modem I might be interested...
The modem goes back Monday unless I get a fix first - I'll give Dynalink one last chance to come up with something and failing that, try swapping it for a Alcatel or something.

76739 2002-09-06 12:55:00 I connect my laptop to an ethernet router, using a USB network adapter.
Its seamless and reliable.

The USB adapter is a generic "docking station" with Keyboard, Mouse,Serial,Parallel and USB replicated, plus ethernet.

76740 2002-09-07 08:37:00 That sounds like a useful beast - i might investigate. I'll admit to being a little cagey about any USB devices at the moment, though I must admit that I don't have any problems with my USB printer and camera. Thanks for the earlier help

76741 2002-09-07 08:45:00 In England BT have a DSL account where they supply a USB modem as part of the package. There have been lots of problems like yours with these modems and the fix is to use a powered USB Hub (as its a power related issue) in that case. The other fix they have been using is to install a PCI USB card and plug into that. John Grieve (367)
76742 2002-09-10 10:04:00 I have ended my problems by giving up on USB and going the ethernet router way - it works fine. After all the hassles of the last week I now believe all those warnings about USB modems and will avoid them from now on. Thanks to everyone who helped.
